Hi.

I can't establish connection with PPPoE authorization. I tried several random builds (with factory defaults) back to r40559. Every time I get this sort of log:
Code:

Jan  1 01:34:06 DD-WRT daemon.notice pppd[14078]: pppd 2.4.8 started by root, uid 0
Jan  1 01:34:37 DD-WRT kern.info kernel: [ 2077.917025] al_eth 0000:00:03.0 eth2: al_eth_down

Jan  1 01:34:38 DD-WRT daemon.notice pppd[14225]: pppd 2.4.8 started by root, uid 0

ISP provides just login and password. Eventually I googled strange solution: switch to "PPPoE Dual", Advanced Settings -> Use DHCP -> No. After clicking Apply Settings, I had message of "Invalid ip address", but then all is well and I have Internet now Confused Stock FW can establish connection just fine, as expected.

What is the problem?

Welcome to the forum Smile

What is the latest build you have tried (40599 is not a good build)

For an optimal experience of DDWRT take note of the forum guide lines:

I can confirm also, i tried r42954 and even builds from 2019. I have a feeling that it has been broken from day 1??.

I am currently using EA8500 using PPoE, my ISP uses a basic username and password to authenticate and it is working just fine.

I tried factory reset from router gui, reset button from router and CLI nvram erase

Thanks

I'm on r43028 now, 40599 was the oldest, I thought there is no point in trying older ones.

No indeed no point using older builds, as this seems confirmed by other users you might consider reporting it as a bug in the bug tracker

I can't register at bug tracker, I'm getting "CAPTCHA failed to handle original request" even if I solve freaking google captcha.

If those suggestions don't work, Trac may have been locked down again. It wouldn't be the first time.

Is there any update on this issue? I have exactly the same problem, actually I have never managed to make PPPoE working on R9000 + DD-WRT, so thanks for finding this out. It works indeed. However there is a problem with this setup. Unchecking "use DHCP" option under "advanced settings" of PPPoE connection basically disables use of DNSMasq for DNS. And without it DNS resolution doesn't work well, unless setup manually on each device.

How did you resolve clients DNS issue? I am using DD-WRT v3.0-r43516 std (06/25/20).

Add this to your startup script and see if it fixes the issue:

Code:
sleep 10
insmod nf_conntrack_proto_gre
insmod nf_conntrack_pptp
insmod nf_nat_proto_gre
insmod nf_nat_pptp

It helps to fix pptp connections from lan to external servers, but might help pppoe as well

you DO NOT disable "DHCP" option under "basic settings" or DNS...
DNSmasq is the default DHCP and DNS manager it works ok with pppoe interface...
I do have a pppoe (ISP interface) and works ok, with DDWRT...

off topic
the only thing i noticed, on the recent few builds, is my router looses connectivity, no idea why, still debugging it ...
it has, a sudden wi-fi drop and my ISP modem has to be restarted too..not only my router...
so, im assuming its either ath9k (wifi) problem or something wrong with pppoe as my modem needs reboot too...

I wish it was possible but if you read OP's solution to our PPPoE not working: "PPPoE Dual", Advanced Settings -> Use DHCP -> No. , in this setup DNSMasq for DNS gets disabled automatically, although DHCP server is enabled... It is not possible to re-enable DNSMasq for DNS.

Are you connecting to two modems? What is the purpose of using PPPoE Dual if you are not? Just thought I would ask for the sake of discussion.

OP explained why: it just doesn't work with PPPoE. I was never able to make R9000 to work with PPPoE, until I found this "solution" written by OP. Btw PPPoE works fine with stock R9000 firmware.
