Before I set up a syslog server, the only reason I wish to do this is to be able to grep the syslog for events where the router (mine linksys e3000) hands a device an ip address via DHCP. I looked for sample messages by searching but I didn't find anything.
edit: searched further and it seems both possible and not possible based on what I found, the possible one involves dnsmasq and dhcp scripting which is certainly over my head.

Perhaps it's time for a new build. Recent builds are logging lots of DHCP events in the syslog that older builds omitted. _________________ Five Linksys WRT1900ACSv2's on 42926, 43904, 44048:

Thanks for the replies. I lucked out, since I use a Unifi Access Point for Wifi. It has config for a remote syslog server and sends exactly "MACAddress associated" "MACAddress disassociated". Now I can detect those pesky not pingable/arp-able iphones leaving and arriving home.
