I was trying to push my DD-WRT to give to its DHCP clients DNS address of my choice (for e.g. 8.8.8.8 ) instead of its own one.

I have tried both Local DNS and Static DNS fields, but none of them, nor all together seem to work.

And finally, what is the role of those two DNS settings within my configuration, where router's WAN connection is set to DHCP?

I have figured out, that putting into Additional Dnsmasq Options:

dhcp-option= option:dns-server, 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

works as expected.

But still remaining question on DNS addresses options available in GUI.

It is at the top right, next to the word 'Help', and it opens a floating help menu. That menu contains a lot of text. I am unsure whether that text answers the poster's question.

The latest patch for that help file screwed the pooch on explaining the local DNS configuration entry, of course, because the original help text was incorrect, but it didn't so much for the 3 static entries. I just realized the first part was (still) blundered.

Back to point: People post questions that are sometimes answered directly in the included help files in the webUI. Otherwise, there are wikis and forum posts readily searchable. Some wikis still need updating to come in line with latest updates, it seems. If you want to find the information and link it or answer the questions, feel free. But people don't learn to fish by being handed fresh fish.

I missed that help menu, honestly have never noticed it for years. Indeed it has a good and clear explanation now, but there is still no answer to what does Local DNS mean.
Sorry for bothering. I do always do own research upfront before coming with question.

The local DNS server IP can be assigned to the router's IP itself, with proper additional options on the services page added, or I think you can use that to assign it to a Pi Hole, etc. client device on the LAN subnet to redirect local dns lookups to another device running dnsmasq. I think that is the correct explanation off the top of my head. From what I understand, dnsmasq handles local dns by default in DD-WRT, so the setting is technically "irrelevant".
