Issues/Errors: Brick and rolled back to Build 42617 (after 42617 nothing work so far, looks like new images are too big to apply)
Impossible, Flash size is 128MB, the firmware file is only 29.42MB _________________ Peacock Thread-FAQ -- dd-wrt Wiki

Not necessarily impossible, however, this may be in line with other similar devices' firmware image issues as far as bricking or not successfully flashing. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

Router Model: EA6400
Issues/Errors: Same issue with ASUS RT-AC3200, new build after 42617 are too big (over 27500KB) only can applied to the first boot image, and always failed to apply second boot image.
Router Model: Linksys EA6700
Firmware Version: DD-WRT v3.0-r42847 std (04/06/20)
Kernel Version: Linux 4.4.217 #1247 SMP Sat Apr 4 09:27:11 +04 2020 armv7l
Reset: no
Uptime: 15:37
Mode/Status: Gateway / working
Asus RT-AC3200: its not bricked. you were unable to flash. too big images cannot brick a router. it simply will not be flashed. the router just reboots. firmware remains the same
Linksys EA6700:27500 should not be too big for 32 mb flash

It is impossible for the firmware image to be to big at 30MB. You are correct in it being possible to brick the router, however I didn't quote that part on purpose. _________________ Peacock Thread-FAQ -- dd-wrt Wiki

There are 16MB flash devices that will not take a 15MB image due to flash layout restrictions (TP-Link comes to mind). Not going to go 'round and 'round chasing this rabbit. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

Hi there,
I'd like to say I'm not a kernel developer, just report what happened to my AC3200 after applied the new image.
Once those new images applied (after build 42617), my AC3200 was continently reboot with mini-web rescue enable, I had to put the AC3200 in rescue mode then flashed with build 42617 to bring it back to normal.
Checked those flash's size, the build 42617 is 27816KB, and anything newer then that are 30092KB - 30124KB, please correct me if I'm wrong.

r42681 and up are around 29.41796875 MB MB or thereabouts. And yes, even with a 128MB flash chip, again... it all depends on how the bootloader lays out the flash partitions and if it somehow limits the size. This is nothing new.
Not sure if you have to try and use this install procedure when you upgrade every time or not, but did you try using the CFE mini webserver?

Just an "FYI", there are certain devices' whose image sizes were askew, but should be fixed in the next release per BrainSlayer.
Thanks for replying, I have to force my AC3200 into rescue mode, then execute the ASUS rescue tool to TFTP the build 42617 image; that CFE mini webserver didn't help at all (always interrupted by timeout in the middle while boot image transferring.)

You may want to use static IP on your device that is flashing the router or a switch in between the device and router. Sounds like the connection is not staying alive. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

Yes, I'm using static IP for the work, but only using ASUS rescue tool with force rescue mode works for my AC3200....

And also have to direct connect to the AC3200 works, tried with 2 hops and 3 hops always failed....

Non-managed switch. A regular dumb switch/hub directly connected to client and router. Not over your network. I specifically have 10/100 and 10/100/1000 "hubs" on my bench because some devices require it to make things work (i.e. when TFTP flashing). I may have to split this discussion from the thread. Not really a good place to be sidelining. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"
