Hi everyone, today I bought a TP Link Archer C7 Version 5 US. I wanted to change the Firmware so that I can use OpenVPN for all my devices. As soon as I opened the Router I updated the firmware to the latest version (TP Link) I gave it a try but wasn't worth it.
I downloaded the latest version available for Archer C7 V5, which is 02-10-r42335, and renamed it, then follow the procedure in the wiki portal for this router.
Suddenly, after the router rebooted I wasn't able to reach it any possible way, I was able to get IP address from the DHCP but I couldn't reach out to the router (web, ssh, ping).
After a few hours of troubleshooting and surfing the web, I decided to roll back to the TPlink firmware, I followed the steps with the TFTP, renamed it and guess what? Doesn't work either.

I’ve found that the router is behaving somehow strange, here the reasons why:
1) It is assigning me IP from the DHCP by cord
2) The router is broadcasting the SSID “dd-wrt” and assigning IP throughout DHCP
3) if I plug in the internet cord (from modem), the router detect it and I have Internet access but without DNS.
4) No access any way to the router (SSH, Ping, Web)
5) I did a tracert from my laptop and I got all hops until Google DNS (8.8.8.Cool, even the 192.168.1.1 (from the router) showed up
6) as soon as I power on the router, the power and WPS bottom light up (no flashing), then the WPS bottom turn off and WAN port light up (even though is not connected).
7) if i plug in my cord in LAN1, automatically LAN3 and LAN4 light up (no cord connected)

I tried the following while I was troubleshooting::
A) reset bottom
B) roll back original TP Link firmware through TFTP
C) Downgrade DDWRT version through TFTP
D) 30-30-30 reset
E) Wireshark my ethernet card and I found that the router (192.168.1.1) is asking for 192.168.1.137, also a lot of DNS request. Wireshark also showed me that the router is retransmitting (if I am not mistaken) my connection when I tried to ping, web, ssh the router.
F) the TFTP procedure doesn't show anything in the software, so I am not sure whether is working or not.
G) Tried to plug in on another LAN port, doesn't work either
H) Connected through the WiFi network and tried to reach out the 193.168.1.1, doesn't work.

Now, I’m running out of option and I dont know what else to do. I dont want to believe that my new router has just died.
Please if someone has any information how I can solve it, i’d really appreciate it.
Sorry if I’m disturbing you all with my explanation but I wanted to be as clear as possible

After the dd-wrt factory to dd-wrt install did you set a password with the browser ? Default is admin or empty, try both with telnet

If you get DHCP IP adress on LAN and WLAN the interfaces are active, maybe the services you try are dead.

There are posts that the httpd dies on this hardware with some newer builds after applying modified settings. ssh is not enabled by default. If you get IP over LAN or WLAN what do you get on a connected laptop (ipconfig /all) ? DHCP server and standard gateway should point to the same IPv4 address of dd-wrt device. Did you try telnet with putty or equal to this IP? The default IP should be 192.168.1.1

Hi Servicetech for your prompt response, the only protocol I didn't try was Telnet (Hahaha), I'm gonna try it and let you know. However, what can I check if I get connection?

On the other hand, the IP Address that I got from DHCP, was net 192.168.1.x (normally 192.168.1.118 LAN and 192.168.1.120 WLAN). So I don't know whether to use TFTP 192.168.1.66 or 192.168.0.66.

I did't change any default password nor username, because I couldn't have access to the Router. Since I changed the stock firmware it was never reachable.

I decided to buy a USB-TTL cable so that I can have more information throughout serial console.

Also, reading the forum I couldn't find which one is the most stable version for Archer C7 V5 US. So, if anyone can provide me the stable one. I'd appreciate it.

My plan is to have this router available to use OpenVPN, have all my devices on a different country IP address. (Avoiding geo-location)

DHCP is runing, what does dhcp service provide as default gateway, dns IP ?

If you set a password on the first start, you should get telnet access with user root and your password, if you did not set a password try admin or blank password.

If you are able to get the busybox command line, you can change the dd-wrt firmware to the r38253 for C7 v5, that was reported to work in other thread, maybe instable 5G !

telnet into the busybox shell and download with IP if dns fails.

cd /tmp

wget ftp://185.84.6.100/betas/2019/01-10-2019-r38253/tplink_archer-c7-v5/tplink_archer-c7-v5.bin

write /tmp/tplink_archer-c7-v5.bin linux

nvram erase && reboot

Reconfigure from scratch, Use the NG mixed WLAN settings

If you get the basics running you have more options....

Thanks, I'm gonna try out and let you know.

The DHCP provides me only IP from the net 192.168.1.x and Gateway, not DNS is provided.

Its beta software, you need to try until you have a working build flashed. I could not find any success posts for recent builds for your model,

You may try the build r38507, its a little bit newer, and there was a success post with C7 v5 (the post did not mention US version) you may need to use the IP 185.84.6.100 instead of ftp.dd-wrt.com if DNS fails.

wget ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2019/01-29-2019-r38507/tplink_archer-c7-v5/tplink_archer-c7-v5.bin

Its recommended to erase the nvram settings before reboot, so you start "clean"

I have been waiting for 10 minutes for any new line, but nothing happens. Looks like this is the last state my router has. Any idea?

Looks to me like you reached end of boot sequence. Those are the last lines of boot-up. Is it still not functional?

on openwrt Luci Management Web Service is a module you need to install by openwrt package manager. Are you shure you followed the openwrt tutorial on that? https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/luci/luci.essentials

you cannot/should not install dd-wrt on openwrt flash. Go back to factory firmware reset all settings inside the TP-Link firmware and then flash the factory-to-ddwrt.bin

Yes, those are the last line on my router. It is not functional yet, i got DHCP by cord or wireless but cannot reach out to the router by IP and throughout serial console just stopped there and I am unable to type anything

How come do I get back to my factory firmware? That is what I’ve been trying to do but when I follow the TFTP procedure, I got the following error: "checksum bad" here the detail in my console.

Is this the renamed US firmware for your C7 v5 ?

Don't connect router and laptop directly, install a switch between both, so the LAN port on the laptop with the TFTP server isn't dropping when the power on the C7 is removed.

If this does not solve the checksum error, try a different TFTP server, reload TP-Link firmware file (different browser), rename and move into the tftp root, temp. disable virus protection for download

I've seen the same error posted somewhere around, but cannot remember the solution, maybe someone is able to assist ...

If directy conneted without switch try to set the Laptop LAN port to different fixed speed / duplex settings 10Mbit/half duplex for example, check if one combination solves the checksum error after tftp download

The OpenWRT gcc entries are because the toolchains used to build DD-WRT are from OpenWRT. This is nothing new. Your deciphering of that information was quite erroneous, servicetech.

Ok. Still revert to factory firmware should be possible, because the serial output posted does not look too bad, do you agree ?

Correct. Some things to keep in mind, though. Default TP-Link router IP is 192.168.0.66.
