As an old techie with a TL-WDR4300 router, I've found that I require lots of patience and tweaking to get a new DD-WRT build working somewhat stable. The CLI is definitely our friend. Wiping and rebooting NVRAM is more crucial than ever with all the new revisions and driver updates.
Basically, my rule of thumb for a new build is if the new build runs okay (Wi-Fi, etc) with the OOBE defaults after factory reset, I tweak my configuration settings (one by one) to get it working the way I want or at least isolate any issue with the new build. For certain, it is getting harder and harder to narrow and isolate issues because logging messages are not a priority in the new builds.
Thus, does Wi-Fi work after the upgrade and factory reset?

:/ does anybody know if this is something that is planned to be fixed in the future?
Finally upgraded from r40527 to r41986. So far the web gui seems to be very responsive compared to before. All my previous settings worked fine. Speeds are fine. Fq_codel_fast works and feels faster than fq_codel. Do not use cake qos as it will brick this router model!
The only problem that i still have on a consistent basis is whenever the router is rebooted and the wifi would start broadcasting for 5 seconds and then it would turn off for 5 seconds then back on again. Does anyone know if its by design or a bug?
Based on my obsevation of comments here it seems that for any given dd-wrt build if my D-link router runs fine then others with Tp-Link/Linksys routers experiences problems and vice versa. I wonder why...

So i just tested my router using cake qos and its making the router CPU up to 100% followed by unresponsive to pings. I guess cake just wont work with this router due to lack of ram.

Same here for both 4300 and my 3600's
No build so far after 41686 will work gives channel unknown.
After NVRAm wipe / cli upload appears ok , as soon as you apply any sort of wifi security ( WPA2 etc) gives the channel unknown on the summary and wifi is no longer working

I experienced similar issues with recent new builds. To resolve my issues with recent new builds, I carefully re-read and reviewed the Qualcomm Atheros Wi-Fi Settings Guide to apply the tips and recommendations noted. And, after a nvram erase, I tweaked and tested my configuration with various Wi-Fi mode/channel/bandwidth/power combinations until I found a desired one that worked and successfully started the hostapd service.
For future troubleshooting and baseline, I now use a Git repo to track changes to my configuration files.
