Absolute nightmare.
Been using kongs firmware. Tried latest BS one and for various reasons (see my other posts) decided to go back to kong.
Flashed Kong Firmware. WRONG! Accidentally flashed an openwrt one I had downloaded, as was going to test and never did. I was tired!
No problem. Next mistake. Tried to install dd-wrt latest from openwrt. Mistake.
Ended up with a ddwrt logo but an openwrt logon box asking me to change password. I could not change password.
OK out with my serial cable.
Downloaded latest netgear firmware and installed it with no problem.
Reset password as requested but cannot login using it.
Went through netgear recovery (using routers serial number etc) and reset password again.
No, still not accepting it.
Recovery process again and this time wrote password in notepad and copy/pasted it.
Then did same in logon box. Still not accepting it.
I tried admin, root and blank as username.
Tried every password I have ever used in ddwrt and netgear and default one of password.
Tried many times and netgear is screwed. No password will work.
Now cannot get the netgear firmware to update using the methods on netgears pages.
Tried with serial cable but never see it enter firmware recovery mode.
Getting desperate now but will keep trying.
If anyone has a suggestion, even if it involves a sledge hammer I am open to trying it _________________ Router Model: Netgear R8000

Well I told myself if I made a post, as soon as I did, things would all start working.
Just after I posted I gave it a really good thump. Just like I used to do with my old TV set 40 years ago. Something sounded like it cracked but no visible evidence of that.
But I l looked at my screen and I am logged in.
I just hope that what I think I read, that its possible now to update to latest ddwrt from the latest netgear without it giving an error that it is not allowed to install an old firmware version?
Going to play with the latest netgear firmware for an hour or so first. Just to get a look and feel for it. _________________ Router Model: Netgear R8000

I flash from/to DDWRT and openWRT and back using TFTP without a problem, but it is on my Netgear R7800, one using hnyman's build the other using Kong's openWRT build

The OpenWRT build I got for my R8000 is only a general one. I was thinking about having a look but changed my mind.
Wish i had deleted the file, would not have got into this mess then.
I am quite liking the NetGear firmware to be honest. Going to give it a run for a couple of days. Has a VPN server now so I will give that a test and if the performance is good I may stick with it. Certainly until there is a DD-WRT that works with my Wifi properly. _________________ Router Model: Netgear R8000

Last time I took a look at the Netgear stock for my R6400 it was still on linux 2.6 (for the R7800 it is Linux 3.4)
Is that still the case for your R8000?
(uname -a from CLI)
Not sure how to get cli on it. quick google looks a bit long winded. Will have a go later. _________________ Router Model: Netgear R8000

Sorry, nothing in that guide works on my computer or is not available to download. I tried with NetgearTelnetEnable on github but cannot find out how to download the file there or its not available. No activity for 3 years so I guess the file is not there any more. _________________ Router Model: Netgear R8000

The VPN server is working a treat on the stock firmware and a doddle to setup.
It seems it has everything I need now but prefer the ddwrt gui.
Will have to make my mind up whether to stick with stock but cannot fault anything so far. _________________ Router Model: Netgear R8000

Back on Kongs firmware.
The VPN server was really good on netgear stock firmware. Very fast and simple to configure.
The wifi and internet were problematic. It had trouble keeping the connection alive for more than a day or two, with the workload I put it under.
Back on my trusted kong and will remain so for the foreseeable future _________________ Router Model: Netgear R8000
