Modern routers hardware lock the transmit power with preset table values per country. All you can do is set the channel and let it adjust for you. You can ignore that setting as it's basically a vestige of the past.
its not vestige, there are some nations that dont allow certain channels cause...... government. and we dont like that. such as canada, haiti has all the usa channels, with higher tx power. now if the user chooses to "violate their laws and fight the law", up to him/her. just saying whats available and what isnt.
in english. thats a steaming pile of bull shit _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)

Alright lol, great responses here. Sure, set it to 30dBm and pray to the wifi gods your max transmit power is granted.
Other things to consider are heat, noise or distortion, interference, errors and retries. But if "up to 11" is your thing, go for it.

I guess you haven't looked at Panama lately... FTW... though my R9000 won't go beyond 30.
Maybe R7800 and R9000 hardware sold in the USA are further locked down when compared to other regional markets?
The hardware in the R7800, EA8500, R9000 all have been designed to run at full power all the time. The concern over heat, while valid, has never been raised here on any of the Atheros routers as causing issues when running at "11". Please don't fear monger....
In terms of the 30dBm limit, my guess is that limit is hard baked into the firmware of the chipsets. Someone with a wifi-6 chipset would need to chime in on this and see if their chipset will allow Panama TX power. No matter, you are correct in your statement that we are at the mercy of the designers of the chipset to allow even 30 dBm. It's for this reason why Marvell really blows followed by Broadcom.
And, lastly, let's not forget why you're on these forums and using custom firmware in the first place. You want to eek out the best from your hardware...so why not have the right info out there to help guide people? _________________ FORUM RULES
Wow, all very good points. And the last point in very good : we all put DD-WRT in our router so we can squeeze every bit of power out of our machines and give oursellfs more options to choose from. Stock firmware sucks....

Some folks are not aware of the (still) present hidden config pages in certain stock firmware. How do you think HyperWRT -> Tomato / Sveasoft -> DD-WRT / OpenWRT got this stuff? It didn't just magically appear, some, if not most all of it was already there. You can thank Linksys and Broadcom for that, mostly. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

I was listing all the possibilities. I think it's equally important to point out that more power isn't always better.
I do think these routers have among the best radios in the consumer market.

Some folks also fail to realize that had Broadcom not even made the market, nothing else would likely exist. Fair competition and all that shit. I could type out a wireless networking history lesson here, but I won't. WaveLANDiego existed before the first WRT54* hit the shelves, methinks. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

The very first wifi I can remember were those WaveLan Orinoco cards in 2000-2001...I remember setting up a wifi system using a PC and several wifi cards connecting back to the PC.... Ah the memories... Then D-Link came out with some Super-G cards.... It's amazing how far it's all come.
WaveLAN/WaveWAN-Diego. My Linux mentor and a few other folks, whose faces escape me for the ones I have met while I was stationed in San Diego during the late 90s and early 2000s. The project was during the infant years of wireless. I initially met Eric (bilcat) at a LAN party in San Diego to play some Quake. I passed by his server rack, the suitcase, and something caught my eye. Slackware 3.3 was my first distro (RedHat 4.2 was second) and the rest is history, as the cliche goes. Anyhow, yeah, I remember when they built the first two links and got them working. It was some crazy neat stuff. So, yes, I know exactly what you're talking about I was meaning in the soho wireless networking / router market, though. I don't recall anyone else having anything going off the top of my head is all. I've slept and consumed adult beverages since then. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"
