So assuming it's a v1, is it worth getting or am I asking for compatibility issues? I have to decide pretty quickly (today basically). The alternative is picking up a R7800 for ~$100 off ebay. $50 would be great as long as the firmware is compatible.
The non-V2 model has a funky hardware configuration overall and its wireless chipsets are not well supported for DD-WRT (no 5ghz). I would save your money, even if it were a V2 to be honest.
I found a Netgear R7800 for a fair price (~$90USD). It was delivered a few days ago and I've had it plugged in stock for the last couple days. So far, it appears stable, so I'm ready to flash with DD-WRT firmware. But, I see that there are 2 versions of the firmware. I've seen it recommended to opt for Kong over BrainSlayer, but I don't see why. Also, if I try one, I assume I can swap for the other like other firmware options. Is that correct?

hmm, yep R7800 is so far, the best DD-WRT router around...
Few things to consider, there is a LAN/Switch latency only on high grade ISP WAN speeds more than 200MBit ...
I do have 200Bit kind of..., and never had any issues nothing that i noticed, so may be its up to ISP/Interface and so on...but its there..
There are few tricks to improve it like, how to force its CPU's or move processes/services from core to core in order to balance its load...
Kong builds are no longer available, only on demand...from a kind forum members....
so far, last Kong build 40270, is very stable...and some, users still use it..i guess...
BS builds for it are more updated as, he has this unit too..no idea how he test it prior realise, but Kong was testing it more intense.....
Currently, there are some new development going on, new BS builds are bursting day to day...prior to upgrade, do read new builds threads....
R7800 do support VLAN's, but is using different commands,
swconfig instead of ifconfig...
so far i noticed, on last Kong build there is a GUI menu for it, im using it instead...it works
on last Kong builds there is still module for DNScrypt that you have to call from CLI if you need advanced DNS...
otherwise for a basic needs or home use its more than a great... _________________ Atheros

FWIW, I got the R7800 loaded with DD-WRT and speaking to the MR1100 tonight. All appears copacetic with better speeds than I was seeing before. I will have to see about adding an antenna to the MR1100 or a whole house LTE booster, but for now I'm all set up.
Welcome, you have the most options with R7800. By the way what build are you running?
Use what works best for you, but keep in mind if you are jumping around on builds it's best to factory reset and reconfigure from scratch.
This is especially important now that most people are jumping between Kong's 40270M and the current flavor of the week from BS (as of now it's r41218).
A lot has changed since July and I've seen on more than one occasion a person running into problems with a current build because they insist on keeping their old config.
This includes coming from a recent BS build, so just a heads up.
I went with the BS build version recommended in the tutorial since I figured steps would match exactly. I was initially going to use Kong, but couldn't immediately locate the final release.
Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r41075 std (09/20/19)
Unless I have an issue, I'll most likely freeze on that version.
