Hi There,

I had an old Linksys WRT54G (Version 8.0) laying in a drawer at work and thought I would give it a spin. I flashed the "12548 Newd Micro" version of dd-wrt and it has been running solidly for the last several days without any problems. I live in a rural area where my download speed caps at 5mbps and upload is 1.25mbps so performance is not really going to be all that important. I was able to run a couple netflix streams, a youtube stream and a torrent, all at the same time from different computers without any issues. No random disconnects or anything. I am satisfied.

I am now thinking it might be prudent to upgrade to the latest "dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin" firmware (dated September 30, 2019 as the time of writing) to get the latest security updates ... 12548 is dated sometime in 2009 if I remember right.

Is this new firmware going to cause me headaches? I figured I would limit the total connections and disable the same things I have disabled to save on RAM.

Is this new build going to be too much? Am I even going to gain anything security-wise with the new build?

Forgive me if this has been answered elsewhere. I did search, but discussion on this router seems to be quite old.

Any micro build router would be relevant, as would most WRT54* posts in general, and there are tons. Wink

You really shouldn't use anything older than 14929, but I would suggest updating to 33772. Don't go newer unless you research the build threads for k2.4 posts, and preferably those using micro builds (they are few and far between...I haven't updated my WRT54GSv6 in months; too busy this summer).

If you have any issues with 33772, try 33555. Do not use anything from 39144 through 39654.

... Okay. So I should search for anything micro and/or WRT54* and there will be relevant data there. Thanks for that. I will do some research this evening. Why the specific builds you mention?

I went ahead and installed it (41212) last night and it seems to be working without any issues ... I disabled things as suggested in the insufficient RAM wiki entry. I kept UPNP running though for now. Curiously, even with it all disabled, free RAM did not really go up. I guess the device is already OOM killing things? Or there is some other management going on? I have been checking free memory using the "free" command.

Good to hear; in that case you should post results in the build thread. Wink

If you don't have any issues then you're good to go. If you have issues and didn't already reset after flashing, try that first and manually set up. Common Broadcom issues to watch for; wireless SSID disappearing or DHCP not renewing. Keep us posted... Cool
