OK thanks. I am sure it was wired up correctly to the router.
There are only 4 pins.
Pin 1 is not used.
Pin 2 is ground.
Pin 3 is Tx.
Pin 4 is Rx.
I did try swapping 3 and 4 around but it made no difference.

I count Pin 1 as being the one closest to the rear-edge of the main board (closest to the power connector/power switch).

Does all this sound correct for the R8000?

I did think about trying it reversed (where Pin 1 would be the one furthest away from the rear-edge of the main board (furthest from the power connector/power switch).
Decided against this as did not want to risk damaging anything.

I will order a different adapter.
The one the OP, a7mag3ddon, had success with.

Cheers, that's exactly how I wired it up Smile

I have drilled a hole in the case and attached the 3 dupont wires to the mainboard and out through the case. No more opening up this router for me Smile
(unless i really do have it wired incorrectly).

Tested again and still no output and the router does not boot. Sits there with all the led lit.
Same if I reverse tx and rx (in case I got these wrong).

I tested that I was not wiring it up wrong by reversing all wires, including ground (after I checked my local pc world had replacement stock if it all went pete tong).

This time the router booted up as normal and all its output was echoed to putty.

The problem I had initially with a device that I soldered pins to the board on was that the push-on terminals weren't making a good connection. Sometimes, you have to bend the pins a little or figure out how to crimp the lug without closing it up completely.

The connectors do feel a bit loose (slide on the pins every easily) but I have just tried to apply some force while connected (bend them slightly) but still no joy.

Also just tried it on a USB2 port (previously used USB3) but still the same.

I think the device is faulty (or not compatible with what I am trying to do) but it passes loopback tests!

a7mag3ddon, I have ordered the same adapter as you have had success with. Will arrive in a couple of days (Tues-Wed at a guess).
Hopefully it will work for me too Smile

OK I have to assign a static IP to the LAN adapter. Anything in the range 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254 by default.

I have done this in preparation but a quick question.

I do not use this range on the R8000 when it is working normally (such as now). I use 192.168.49.2 - 192.168.49.254.
The router is on 192.168.49.1

Do I set my static IP to one in this range (e.g. 192.168.49.2) or is this ignored in this CFE mode?

In which case I follow the instructions and use 192.168.1.2

If you don't get a ping response with 192.168.1.x, then try the other. Trust me, it took a few tries to get good connections on the pins for it to output correctly. And you have to be 100% sure the right wires are on the right pins.

Ah good idea. I will do that. Definitely wired up OK. Just cannot explain why it's not working. Will see if it's me when the replacement adapter arrives in a few days.

New adapter arrived yesterday. Just tested it and got to the cfe prompt instantly (within 10 seconds of powering on router). Did not even have to open up the router. The ones from the old device (which I left attached to the router, poking out through a hole I drilled in the case) work with no problems.

It is on 192.168.1.1 (just tested). Does not use the IP settings defined in the GUI (I guess that's kinda obvious when thinking about it).

Ok, So I followed some directions in here for the modified openwrt-bcm53xx-netgear-r8000-squashfs.chk file, and the router, via the GUI, DID accept the file and proceeded with the flash. Now I am with some others that can NOT access the gui via 192.168.1.1

I visited linksys website for the tutorial to tftp back to stock firmware but it keeps timing out. Was there a fix somewhere in this thread that I did not see?
I even tried flashing factory-to-dd-wrt.chk , just kept seeing "Timed Out" in the windows command menu. Am I stuck? Or how do I get out of this? Would like to put DD-WRT on my R8000.

Thanks
