I currently have a netgear r7000. Already has dd-wrt installed.

But I have quite an old version of it installed: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/07/14) kongac (SVN revision 25090M)

Has worked like a charm for years. But lately it has started to act up, so I figure updating it to a newer version.

But when I go to the list to download a newer version, not sure which one to get (from http://desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/ )

I see:
dd-wrt.K3_R7000.chk
dd-wrt.K3_R7000P.chk
dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_R7000P.bin

Whats difference between v24-k3 and k3 ?

Also, from what I read, the chk files are for initial flashing from stock Netgear, from which you can then use bin files to update to whatever version. But the r7000 only gives the chk files, and the bin file is for r7000p, which is a different router version than what I have.

Or am I looking in the wrong place?

Read the supported models in that directory: http://desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/Supported%20Models

So for a plain R7000 you need the dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_STD.bin

Before upgrading make screenshots or notes of your settings

After upgrading telnet into your router and do:
Code:
nvram erase && reboot

Put settings in manually do not restore from backup

if you use UDP port forwarding and/or Policy based routing for VPN client be sure to disable Shortcut Forwarding Engine on Setup page and after disabling reboot the router

For Wifi settings never use auto channel

The latest kong bin file is here http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/
Is that not often enough for you?

People don't seem to read this: http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/Supported%20Models and realize the dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_STD.bin file is for upgrading several different routers, I guess.

I know that. I try not to give them all the info. I try to make them dig a little.
