Flash how? Using the browser? tftp? I recommend the latter.

I used to have that router. And iirc, sometimes ASUS added a check to make sure the firmware was their own, and not a third-party. In order to get around that problem, you had to back-date the ASUS firmware to a point where they weren't making that check. Then you could install the dd-wrt firmware using tftp.

Btw, which specific dd-wrt firmware are you using?

What specific build are you trying to install from dd-wrt?

Also, be *very* specific about which model of router you have. There were several different versions of the ASUS WL-500, including the WL-500g, WL-500g Deluxe, WL-500gp (Premium), and WL-500gp2 (Premium V2), etc. And if you attempt to install the wrong firmware, it may just reject it, or it's too big, just quit the install.

My gut tells me this is what's happening. You're attempting to install the wrong firmware and so it just quits.

Out of curiosity, I pulled my own ASUS WL-500gP v2 router off the shelf, dusted it off, and decided to play a bit w/ various firmware to see what is and isn't currently supported.

In the process, I did manage to temporarily brick it when I held the restore+wps button for too long (> 30 secs) in an attempt to force a reset. At that point, the power and Air LEDs would just flash in unison, and I couldn't even get it back into restore mode. I eventually had to open the router and short pin 9 on the flash chip to get it back to restore mode.

Anyway, after a lot of testing, I did find that all of the following firmwares worked, at least eventually.

ASUS (OEM), v3.0.4.4, 2010/03/23 (last update ever created):
https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/WL-500gPV2/FW_WL500gpv2_3044_TW.zip

Shibby Tomato, v131, 8/6/2015:
http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K26/build5x-131-EN/tomato-K26USB-1.28.RT-MIPSR1-131-VPN.zip

FreshTomato 2019.2 (mips), 4/20/2019:
https://exotic.se/freshtomato-mips/v2019/2019.2/K26/freshtomato-K26USB_RT-MIPSR1-2019.2-MiniVPN.zip

DD-WRT v39956, 6/6/2019:
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2019/06-06-2019-r39956/broadcom/dd-wrt.v24_mega_generic.bin

Now I'm not going to claim all went smoothly. I found enough quirks to drive most ppl crazy. But after having personally been through the trenches, here's my recommendations.

1. Whenever you decide to change firmware from one kind to another (stock to dd-wrt, dd-wrt to tomato, etc.), *alway* start by installing the stock firmware FIRST! This will cause the fewest problems.

2. Once you're on the stock firmware, update to the new firmware (tomato, dd-wrt, etc.) by placing the router into restore mode (hold the restore button while powering ON until the power LED starts to flash slowly, then release the restore button). Configure your PC/laptop w/ the IP 192.168.1.2 and use tftp (in binary mode) to "put" the firmware file over to 192.168.1.1.

IMPORTANT! Once the firmware is transferred and after the LAN LED stops flashing, wait at least 20 mins before doing anything else! Keep the router powered ON. I have no idea why this works, but if you immediately pull the power and attempt to reboot the router, it never seems to work. Some ppl say wait 5 mins, but even that proved unreliable. So I say wait 20 mins.

3. After 20 minutes, pull the AC plug, wait 30 secs, then reapply power. The firmware will likely boot just fine. In a few cases, however, I did have to hit the restore and/or WPS buttons a few times to "trip" the router into resetting, and then it would finally reboot.

At no time, however, did I run into a problem of the firmware update failing to transfer, or only partially transferring, once I had the router in restore mode.

After a lot of testing, I can say this router is a bit finicky when it comes to installing third-party firmware. But if you follow the procedures above, you should have better luck and outcomes.

If it starts at all, then presumably your setup is correct.

I don't know what else to tell you. It works fine here. If I had to guess, it may be that your flash is corrupted, or perhaps EOL (end of life), by which I mean it's no longer capable of being written to (all flash has a limited number of writes). Esp. given it seems to fail at about the same point.

Did you reset after flashing back to OEM? It sounds like the OEM f/w doesn't reach the address on whichever partition that has failed, but third-party f/w does.

Well that's the first good sign so far.

As I said before, you may have to hit/hold the restore or wps buttons (or both at the same time) a few times, to cause a hard reset before you'll be able to get past the username password issue.

I assume you're using tftp w/ Windows. I would try using Linux, perhaps w/ an Ubuntu Live CD. Maybe there's some weird issue between the router and Windows that's not present when using Linux.
