I'm looking to replace my current RT-AC87U, which is working almost ok - 5GHz channel is always auto-selected by firmware, due to Quantenna driver and that combined with region settings give me some minor trouble...
My needs are basic, I could easily stay with factory fw or Merlin's AsusWRT but.. I really enjoy dd-wrt and the possibilities that come up when using it (including the fact that I aim to learn a thing or two about networking).
As top mention I've seen R7800 on lots of threads with its Broadcom sibling, the R7000.
Are any other routers (from other producers) worth taking into consideration for a daily, dd-wrt based problem-free use? I'd appreciate your advice for a budget of max 150-170 USD, similar in performance with my current router.

Not much to add I would consider a Netgear R6400v2 same CPU as R7000 but Radio's are slightly less but it is in Europe about E 30 cheaper than the R7000.
If you do not have a large house and do not want to spend much money i would buy an R6400v2, this is the router I install most for friends /neighbours/family if they live in an appartment and do not want VPN with large pipes.
Here in RO, the prices are R7800 @ 168 EUR (funny thing, R7000 has the same price) while R6400 is at ~106 EUR.
TBH, i'd go for the 2nd one but i'm not sure which version it is - none of the retailers are that accurate in their online descriptions while in offline retailers I can find only cheap, mass-market routers.

I would expect that all R6400 are v2 but you never know, it is on the outside of the box.
Difference between v1 and v2 is the CPU the v1 has dual core 800 MHz the v2 has dual core 1000 MHz (same cores)
So it is faster but runs slightly hotter (can become 70C)
R6400v1 still a good router and well supported, I have one running for years as it is the router the family uses
Really weird R7000 is the same price as the R7800, the R7800 being a better/faster four stream router.
If you decide to buy an R6400v2, in my signature (bottom of this post) is a guide with instructions for setting up etc.
In comparing the R7000 the R7800, consider the types of clients on your network (Broadcom, Atheros, etc.)
I have read that issues may arise in mixing these. I doubt that you would ever have a complete lack of connectivity, but what I read said that you may not achieve optimal speeds using a client of one type and an AP of another.
Apple uses mostly Broadcom chips, so I would opt for R7000 (or R6400) if you had primarily Apple clients. If your have mainly Qualcomm clients, get the R7800.

get R7800 second hand from ebay.co.uk or amazon
it has a decent price...
connectivity-wise R7800 has better compatibility with all
clients while, Brodacom based routers are classified as
a bit picky...in my whole experience, i've never had any complains from both, but R7800 will outperform R7000 in any case... _________________ Atheros

What are the open drivers like for the netgear chipsets?
