The DIR-868L does very well for DD-WRT and WiFi.

Hello, I would suggest a great condition used Netgear R6400v2 or R7000 since they both are very strong and supported by Kong modified dd-wrt.
Please check that they don't come with the latest manufacturer's firmware, since dd-wrt install may get much more difficult.

if the latest manufacturer's firmware, can downgrade to old firmware or not?

Hello,
See here "Newer NetGear Firmware actively blocking DD-WRT and the likes"
https://www.tweaking4all.com/hardware/netgear-r7000-dd-wrt/
Of course, in such case, downgrade to a manufacturer's non protected firmware is not possible. The only thing to do is to use tricks to make dd-wrt firmware look like a more recent (authorized) firmware or go deeper into hardware.
That said, I recently bought two Netgears routers, one used and one refurbished that neither came with protected firmware.

On D-Link routers you can downgrade to non secure versions of FW from more recent versions of FW.
I presume same thing maybe possible for NG as well. May be alternative methods of downgrading.
