This firmware keeps getting better and better.

Last night there were 12 devices connected to the AP, a bunch of them were just scrolling through social media/sitting idle, two were streaming Netflix and then there was me, downloading a 4GB file, having a Facebook audio call running in the background and playing an online game.

Zero ping spikes, no disconnections, nothing of the sort. The call was crystal clear, the download wasn't interrupted and the game worked flawlessly.

I was in a similar scenario but on the stock Netgear FW a couple of months ago, and 5GHz on that is quite bad since it has random ping spikes way too often.

As always, thanks Kong for your continued support on both custom firmwares.

I finally install the Kong OpenWrt build to try. The UI is crazy over complicated.

The SQM is great on cake and bufferbloat is really low but Internet speed is going down from 560mbs to 250mbs maximum.
Is it SQM price or i missed something?

their sqm is some voodoo with fq_codel or something, dont use it and use the "regular" qos, something htb+simple something (DUMBEST naming schemes i ever seen for qos). cake is exactly as good as i thought it was but its the hardest thing on the cpu so its now quite usless to me.

Thank you for comment, ic.
I did try all 3 SQM options there and internet speed was 250mbs on cake ( with best latency), 270 and 300 on others but so far from my 560 real internet speed. If this true cost and SQM is so hard on CPU and internet speed then it will be useless for today needs

I agree that the gui isn't simply laid out but I attribute that to two things.
Different engineers (everyone has ideas)
It is so modular that maybe it makes sense to break it up.

Those are my guesses.
That said, it's been stable with good speeds (in AP mode) for me.

Yep cake right now is cpu intensive. On my 100Mbps line it consumes 30% on one core, thus your 250Mbps is something I'd expect. But the developers of cake work on an optimized version that should fix this.

I also noticed, that with the modem in brige mode I should not use any linklayer settings, now it comes out with:

http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/49766413

This is quite amazing for high res bufferbloat test. Note I have set it to 90000/30000, thus 88000/29000 is close.

But the others should do much better, fq_codel + simple.qos should do much more than 300.

I also setup wireguard now, works like a charm with my iphone.

Fq_codel is little bit better but still around 300 mbs right now which is around 60% of my paid plan.
Do you think it will be optimized as well in the future? What is the estimated maximum?

Try installing the ‘qos’ package and disable sqm. Check the calculate overhead box

VPN, very easy to setup and faster than openvpn or strongswan.
On iOS you use wireguard app to setup tunnels. The app is pretty cool. All major vpn providers offer wireguard now.

It is probably also the reason why he added qrencode, as you can use it to provide the peer config for the client via qr code.

I hear you but keep in mind Kong & BS like doing bleeding edge stuff. I converted over to pfsense last year for my main router and pfsense has not taken the WG plunge either. Here’s some of the thoughts on it from the pfsense forum.

https://forum.netgate.com/topic/132375/installing-wireguard-vpn

And if you like the under-the-hood stuff this is from the 14 April post:

Quote:
There is also a report out of Germany that shows IPSec faster than wireguard, and both far faster than OpenVPN.

https://www.net.in.tum.de/fileadmin/bibtex/publications/theses/2018-pudelko-vpn-performance.pdf

And someone on Reddit got 5Gbps between two machines with 10G NICs

https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/9bnowo/wireguard_benchmark_between_two_servers_with_10/

In the same post, the author reported 230Mbps on the same setup using OpenVPN with AES-GCM.

I have not had any time to do run it through my tools, but it cannot be worse than softether, which is the biggest security whole I have ever seen. When I looked at the some of the issues, I could clearly see, that it is written by amateurs which have never seen guidelines for writing secure software.

That's why I removed softether from my builds.
IPSec e.g. strongswan which I have been using so far is a code monster, very complex and often gets CVE's

Wireguards codebase is tiny as its featureset, it uses standard opensource crypto modules and leaves routing to iptables etc., good preconditions for a secure software.

Now looking at the openssl debacle, a stable version number and wide spread usage doesn't mean it got proper security testing.
