Like the title says, I want to install dd-wrt on a network switch. Not one of those fancy routers with wifi, just a switch. As an example, the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter PoE (or similar) is something that I'm interested in. Really what I want is a switch that offers PoE, no wifi, so that I can use whatever AP I want.

So are there any network switches that dd-wrt is compatable with? At this point I don't care about brand, but the forum rules come across as saying "If you have hardware questions, don't post in general". Since I have a hardware question (though a general one) I came up with a specific example but I say again that brand does not matter.

The way I understand it, WRT stands for Wireless RouTer.

So if it is not in the Supported Devices list it cannot be flashed with DD-WRT.

FWIW I think all Ubiquity require activation$

How many ports do you need on the switch?

With PoE, do you mean 802.3af or 802.3at?

Switches usually work OK with stock FW.

I have a 8-port Netgear smart Switch.

I only need four ports; three for Access Point, PLEX Server, and Pi-Hole DNS; one for a spare.

I'm looking to power a Ubiquiti UAP-AC-LITE which uses 24V Passive PoE (so neither the 802.3af or 802.3at standard).

I want to set up a VPN tunnel on just the switch so that any device using the internet, Wifi or LAN, would be more secure. I have read that DD-WRT is a great way to set up a VPN tunnel.

I've read how you can turn a router into a switch by just turning off the radios. Why buy a router and AP, then turn off the radio on the router so that the AP is the only device of the two with Wifi? Seems kind of wasteful especially when I can get a switch for far cheaper than a router with all the bells and whistles.

I don't think dd-wrt will fit in mix here.

Use a Unifi US-8-150W switch.

Then run OPNsense or PFsense on a micro PC.

https://opnsense.org

OPNsense is the Community version of PFsense. It's Firewall router with VPN. You need some processing power on the box to run VPN anyway.

What hardware are you using for the Plex server?

Just an old laptop for now. I'm saving money for a good setup down the line. I want to make sure that as I make improvements that they will work well for at least a few years. I want to get it right the first time if possible.

Thanks for letting me know about OPNsense. I'll look into it.

I run Kodi (OpenElec) on an Asus Thinker board S as media-server. Better performance than the RPI.
