Hi guys
just got this router ASUS RT-N66U
H/W ver B1 and F/W 3.0.0.4.378 on 7/19.

a couple questions here as i want to flash it to use it with DD-WRT:
1-shall i do the set up-as explained in the booklet-
the wireless set up first or not?
2-if i understood Cesthree and Kozy,
i should NOT do the firware upgrade after the wireless set up
correct or not?
3-is the method explained by Cesthree (9 sept 2014)
still the best to flash my router?
thanks for your help guys!

It doesn't matter. Go to the Asus gui update page upload this ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2015/07-09-2015-r27506/broadcom_K3X/dd-wrt.v24-27506_NEWD-2_K3.x-big-RT-N66U.trx

Watch your pings. When it returns ttl=64, it's done

I'm working with a ASUS RT-N66U, Asus firmware is 3.0.0.4.382_50470-g033b865.

The DD-WRT firmware is dd-wrt.v24-37305_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega.bin and dd-wrt.v24-37305_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega_RT-N66U.trx.

When flashing DD-WRT this message appears(see attachment), "Firmware Upgrade unsuccessful. This might result from an incorrect image or error transmission, please check the model name RT-N66U and verison of the firmware from support site and try again."
Is this something I'm doing wrong or Asus?

Did you just buy this router?

I knew Netgear was actively rejecting "foreign" firmwares, but I wonder if ASUS has started doing this too?

I purchased the router off Ebay.
I found one more reboot and loaded successfully. Sorry for my confusion.

You have an rt-ac66u. Don’t use the firmware for the rt-n66u.
Also, put the router into recovery mode first as the newer ASUS firmware prevent the flashing of third party firmware.

the rt-ac66u FW is for the A1 hardware (Single core MIPSEL).

For the B1 (dual core), use the RT-AC68U FW.
