I am new at VPNs so this may be a silly question. I want to get set one up but I do not know if I am starting down a path that is a waste. I need to be able to RDP to one of my home machines. Will a VPN prevent that? Is there a "best choice" for dd-wrt? _________________ Netgear R9000

It depends on what your using for RDP, a VPN will not affect RDP like TeamViewer or Screen Connect as far as i am aware.
NordVPN is a great all rounder but PIA slightly faster, personal choice, with the info you've provided it will be hard / impossible for anyone unless they have a glass ball to help you because there are way to may variables in your question.

I would say check with the vpn provider(s) before you sign up or during a trial period. I would think if you know your current public ip or have some kind of ddns (or similar) setup, and do the proper port forwarding on 3389 to the internal machine to which you want to rdp, it should work. Not sure if some vpn providers disallow those kinds of inbound connections though, hence the recommedation to check.. _________________ WRT3200ACM 1st Gen

Just out of curiosity, why would you pay for a VPN when you can run a VPN server on your router if all you are wanting to do is access a local machine from outside your network? _________________ WRT1900AC v2 44048

That is not what I want to do. I want my home network to be on a VPN, securing activity originating on my network. I also want the ability to remotely log in to one of my desktop machines. To sum it up, I want a secure way back into my network as well as having my network secure in its own right.

Based on what you are saying, you will need two VPN setups. One of them will serve a VPN connection to outside clients so they can connect to your network. The other will connect your network to the ExpressVPN.
As far as I know, dd-wrt can handle this scenario. I've never tried it, but it should be doable. To give you a head start, if you've got dd-wrt installed on a router, go to the Services --> VPN tab. You'll see an OpenVPN Server section and an OpenVPN Client section. The Server will allow you to connect to your network, while the Client will allow you to connect to ExpressVPN.
The Server connection will probably the easier of the two to set up. Look around these forums, and you should find enough info to get it up and running. In particular, look for a user named "egc". He/she has posted a guide for setting up the server connection that is basically all you need.
