DD-WRT Router with 2 DD-WRT Hubs - fails over time
My house is too weirdly laid-out for one router to cover all of it, so I have a DD-WRT router (Netgear R7000) with WiFi enabled connected to my cablebox, which is wired to two DD-WRT routers (TP-Link Archer C-7 v2 and TP-Link TL-WR1043ND) configured as wireless access points with DHCP disabled.
Each box is on a different channel to prevent interference and maximize bandwidth, and each has unique SSIDs, so if I get poor SNR I know which AP to switch to (depending on where I am in the house).
Our family has about a dozen mobile devices that we manually switch between access points as we move around the house. There are also maybe 6 fixed wifi devices (printers, Rokus, etc.) that don't change access points. I've set up static leases with assigned IP addresses for most devices in the router.
Over time (a week or two, sometimes less), the wireless connections go from reliable to pretty crappy. Not signal-wise, but ability to reach the outside internet-wise. Usually resetting all the routers fixes it for a while.
I'm wondering if all this manually switching between APs could be causing some sort of crud buildup (I believe that is the correct technical term) over time.
I'm also open to the feedback that I am going about this all wrong. IIRC, I went with different SSIDs for each AP because when I tried using the same one I couldn't get my phone to switch to the one with the highest signal. I went with different channels to minimize interference/maximize SNR. But maybe that is all a bad idea. It would be great if our phones and laptops automatically switched to the wifi channel with the best signal, but none of them seem smart enough to do that, whether I use the same SSID or not.
Does anyone have any suggestions? |
