I tried to make from my router an automous NAS server. It had an old firmware (last updated it in 2013). So when I tried to connect to SMB, Windows told me about SMBv1 issue.
I updated firmware but now when I connect USB drive I see no drive info.
That was the first question.
I'd like to hear from others how they use routers as SMB/DLNA share. Also, I want to use transmission on it and several python scripts.

What firmware did you upgrade to? If it is the recommended 37305 from router database that build is broken on many devices as far as USB goes.
Use the links in white in my sig for latest firmware.

A lot of good information found here for router setup:
http://tips.desipro.de/
MiniDlna setup I used here:

EDIT: JUst reread your subject. 37305 is part or all of your problem.

I have tried to install DD-WRT firmware on the V1, but despite the fact that I have downloaded the -factory.img, using your link in white below ( downloaded r38159 (the first this year) I get a warning from the Netgear interface asking if I want to replace the existing worldwide firmware with the downloaded NA firmware I copied to a USB stick. I am using a Win 7 laptop with all wifi off and a wired connection to the wndr. I have no internet connection with the laptop but am beside a desktop using linux 18.04 and an old tp-link (TL-WR340G) router running as a switch. I am running a mixed network of win 10, win7 Pro and 2* win 7 home premium as well as the linux box listed above.
The TP-Link is not supported by DD-WRT.
So my question is, do I just continue to install the firmware (ignore the NA as described) or not. As a result, I have put the WNDR aside for the moment.
I live in Sydney Australia.

From This wiki
Code:
Note: factory.img is for worldwide units flashing from NETGEAR firmware to DD-WRT, or recovering from TFTP mode. factory_NA.img is the same except for North American units. Webflash is from upgrading an existing DD-WRT firmware to a newer build via update firmware option.

Did you download the wndr3700-factory.img or the wndr3700-factory_NA.img?

OK reading closer you have the proper file.
YOU might try a different version-older or newer- and see what it does.
Not unheard of for the files to be confused in the folders.

I followed your advice and chose another build 33006. loaded using netgear web gui. Unit has now been up running as a switch for 23 days with no glitches. I will leave it as is for a while before I consider updating. Thank you.
