Well, the last few voltage based posts have lost me, you guys are at a level i am not getting for now. But... the good news for me, is that i’ve got it working again and back with ‘as new’ netgear image flashed and router booting up properly again. Hurrah.

It seems in the end it was the order of my pin connections, that fixed red tx light was bugging me as the rx flashed with traffic, it felt wrong. I tested t on another pin and then i saw then it responded in putty and flickered with a key press. It took me a few goes to find right combination, but i finally got into router control and could launch tftpd. From there the rest was as detailed by the experts. Bit of a final quirk in that couldnt access the router login propery until i turned dhcp back on in my windows client... stopping for the night... tomorrow try and get it back to dd-wrt and using my chromecast again, which was the original point!

I am going tontry and post the order of my wiring for anyone else with a r7000p

Smaller pictures. No need to post anymore pictures or order.
All you did is what we all have been doing.

Yeah, didnt mean to do giant pics. The site didnt handle iphone uploads. However, no-one suggested what order the pinds were in, which was the original question i posed, so i thought it might be helpful for someone in future. Not sure what the issue with that is? I’ll wait your explanation of why that is a bad thing before i repost though so as not to upset anyone.

It is all explained in the dd-wrt serial wiki.
If when you connect tx and rx you get no output on the screen, you are supposed to swap them around.
I think we all assumed you tried swapping them before posting.

Yep, but i was getting output before, just couldnt do input until i moved ground and got the order i was posting. I’m not sure why you’re unhappy at my posting details of what worked on a specific model, it really wasnt clear in guides i read what order these pins are in on R7000p, so i thought it might help someone else. I’d never hve got there without this site and the openrouter guides, but that doesnt mean all the info was nailed on. Sorry if i’ve broken some protocol.

You didn’t break protocol. Lol, I’m not upset.

Excellent, I'll put the pics up so that anyone using the combination of R7000p and a DSD Tech USB to TTL (CP2102) can see what order worked for me as I got output with an alternate combination but no input.

On NG it is alway 3.3v---GRD---Tx to---Rx from.

To decipher his bad english:

Pin 1 3.3V (don't connect)
Pin 2 GND
Pin 3 TX
Pin 4 RX

I guess I should've posted, quoting that and made it a little clearer for you. Nobody's upset, it's a learning process Wink

Cheers, I can see what that means that way... but then that might just be a few more days of staring at the pins experience. Like a magic eye picture you start to have some idea whats going on after a while.

Here the full details in term techniques.
On Netgear router, serial interface hardware design are all the same as it is Broadcomm SoC 47xx series cpu.
Pin 1 :power source supply for serial interface module if not used any other power source.Do not connect to serial interface module if it ready use 5v from usb or it will damage both serial interface. It also tell you that serial interface module running V i/o at 3.3v.
Old one like rs-232 used 9v,arduino module used 5v,router almost used 3.3v,cell phone used 1.8v and new in recent year used 1.2v.
Pin 2:both connect to ground=GND for calibration voltage offset. If not then communicate between of 2 serial interface became mismatch. That what you see alot junk data if it is not conneting then may damage serial interface module if it got electrostatic.
Pin 3: It is a transmitter data Txd from router to the receiver pin Rxd of serial interface module.
Pin 4: It is a receiver data Rxd from router to the transmitter pin Txd of serial interface.
If you know only a 3.3v power source of serial port pin on Netgear router then you can easy figure out the rest of other pin.

Then here is how to made a serial interface wireless UART module. In this case convert esp8266 with 32Mbit / 4Mbyte module into wifi UART module.
How to flash esp8266:
https://github.com/jeelabs/esp-link/blob/master/FLASHING.md#initial-serial-flashing

How to use esp8266:

Then some of picture of esp8266 module.

Having reviewed this thread after recently acquiring an R7000P, I didn't read far enough through it, but to verify the serial header, I thought I would add this picture for posterity. Thankfully, I didn't munch my usb-ttl adapter in the process and I didn't have to de-brick the router after flashing 40270M kongac Wink
