I've used dd-wrt on a previous RTN66u router until the hardware died. I was having wifi issues, see Prefader's post, he summed it up right, and I've posted on it in other forums. It seems like anything from 2018 the wifi has not worked, so my question is first, what version of dd-wrt has stable wifi, on the guest, and the 2.4GHZ? Does this version have the crack fixes? I believe the version I used on this other rtn66u was r32170. On this other router I have tried builds 35452, 35916, 35927, 36104, 36154, 36168, 36330, and 36410. None have given reliable wifi and guest networks. Second question, should I be using the mega or big builds? So far I've used big builds. I'd appreciate knowing which dd-wrt has the stable wifi with stable vap and guest network so this new rtn66u router can be stable.
Thanks.
Dave.

Use the build with the K3.x kernel.

Thanks. I believe I tried this one and it didn't work, the 2.4 was gone when the public network came up on the 2.4. Are you not having this problem?
Appreciate.

Did you tick the reset option while flashing?

Do not erase nvram with this model.

There have been problems with disapoesring SSID wheb configuring VAPs with the 3 ptevious builds.

For the overly curious would you mind explaining why you write:

(bold my emphasis)

I have upgraded in the past without either erasing nvram or even choosing reset from the GUI. I'd like to say I've done this without issues, but since October 2017 anything I've flashed after build 33525 has had problems.

For me erasing nvram does not seem to help (or hurt).

Choosing reset sometimes seems like it leaves settings in place from the last build... I'll need to confirm this.

BTW thank you for pointer about the issues with using channel 1 or 6 with a neighbor using channel 2. Going to channel 11 seems to have reduced the wireless drops.

Yes I did hit reset in the gui for the flash. I wonder why your build is working?

Unrelated, do you know the antenna specifications for the three antennas that come with the rt-n66u? Are these interchangeable? I've got a dead Netgear 6050 AC750 that also has three detachable antennas they are listed as 5dBi I was wondering if I could use them on the rt-n66u?

Back to dd-wrt have you had successes with other builds?
Thanks.
Dave.

Hello. I'd like to get a feel for the first time load of ddwrt on the RT-N66U. I saw the old docs about how things were kinda weird, but also things seem much better now. Its been several years since i put ddwrt on anything. Have most ppl had good experience in there upgrade? And is there anything to currently be aware of before/after flashing?

Here's my two cents worth...

I use v3.0-r35531 big [03/26/18] because it's the latest BS build that I have used that can retain a consistent wifi and internet connection. Every subsequent build that I have tried, up to r36410, either has no wifi or wifi connections that lose internet after 5 to 10 minutes.

My setup is...

My Asus RT-N66U is a router for my tethered iPhone hotspot. I connect the iPhone through USB and I have an OpenVPN client on the router that connects to a Docker OpenVPN server that I run on a free micro instance at AWS.

Just wen't back to 34311-mega after trying most of the r36xxx series. Are you still happy with 35531?

Earlier today, I decided to try 36808 (08/30/18) and so far it's working. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

I am still getting these Wifi connection hangs running 36808, 08/30/2018 on my RT-N66U. (No firmware or configuration reset. But I am convinced it's not related to that because I have tried at least 3 or 4 other builds on duplicate RT-N66U configured clean / from scratch, and the problem persists on those.) Like others have reported, I have a VAP / VLAN setup: 2 SSID's on the router + 2 separate class C subnets. This setup used to work flawlessly and reliably for a couple of years before some build in late 2017 or early 2018 introduced whatever bug it is that is causing this.

In spite of my earlier posts a few months ago that I had a solid router + Wifi operation (which I posted too soon - only a couple hours after updated) -- in fact I have been experiencing the same flaky Wifi connections as everyone else is reporting. It is extremely annoying.

The problem does not seem to affect continuous network connections, like when playing a first-person shooter game on my iPad for hours on end, it never drops. Same when watching long youtube videos, no problems within the video itself.

The problem may be related to DNS in some way because it only seems to manifest mainly while web browsing, going from one link to another. When it freezes, I have to turn off WiFi on my laptop or mobile device for a couple of seconds, then turn it back on and the problem is cleared up.

I hope DDWRT devs will look into this as it is a persistent and very annoying issue that has been going on for many months now.

Let me know if I can be helpful w/ beta testing.

Also skipped 35531 for 36808 based on recent posts here, so far so good.
I'll update further in the build release thread after some real-world soak time, initial report is here:

CHeers,

Are you using VAPs or VLANs in your configuration? Just curious. It seems that mainly the VAP/VLAN configs are the ones affected by this persisting Wifi connection-hang bug.

The WiFi bug (intermittent disconnects OR connection remains but unresponsive and "no internet") has been plaguing my setup since I put DD-WRT on this router back in 2016. I've tried countless WiFi settings adjustments and numerous firmware versions including (but not limited to) 33492, 35531, 35916, 36808 - all with frustrating WiFi. So I dug through this thread's history to where I found the first reporting of the WiFi bug - November 2015. Applying the firmware version from before the bug, DD-WRT v3.0-r28054 big (10/30/15), has yielded stable results for 12 hours now of pretty heavy usage Smile ... the longest span of stability I've experienced with this device! I'll update the wiki if this consistency remains for a full week of up-time and try to reach out to the development team to see if I can help troubleshoot the root cause.

Hope this helps fellow formerly-frustrated users!

Best,
-Mike
