I have an R9000 right now, running Kong's latest build, and I love it. I'm using a custom VPN setup, and I want to extend my wifi through my home, but still keep everything on my main network. I also want the wifi coverage to allow me to move around the home without losing wifi or having to change my SSID network.
As I understand, WDS is the best option for this.
Can someone give some recommendations on the best router for me to load DD-WRT to and use as the WDS extender to the R9000?
Also, if anyone has done this with R9000 before and has any recommendations or tips/advice on the setup, I'm open ears.

well the best option is a WAP but you'd need a cable between the units...
and you could use a power grid Lan adaptors to mimic the cable need...

First, I want to be clear: My goal is to have 1 wifi network all across my home, and to be able to walk all over the home without any connectivity interruption or loss. So basically all the AP's are 1 wifi network, and automatically devices are "handed off" between the AP units.
Will WAP function in this way? By the way, the tip for the powergrid LAN adapters is awesome!

wds = what u want when the repeaters are connected to the host by wifi also
wap = what u want when the repeaters are connected to the host by ethernet
end result is the same (more or less). with the wap option u wont have the "half bandwidth" limitation of wds, but since we are probably talking AC rates of 866 or higher, half probably is more than enough anyway.
if doing wds just make sure to stay with qualcomm atheros repeaters, ive also heard and seen more than twice that marvell <--> qualcomm works in wds apparently as well _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)

So extending the WDS is a forgone thing. Flashing the routers to a new firmware doesn't bother me since the R9000 & the R7000 are out of warranty. It certainly can't be harder than reflashing a motherboard from let's say Dell to EVGA.

First, awesome post! Much appreciated for the great info.
But I want to ask you: Since I'm using an R9000 as my main router (Netgear R9000), which device would you recommend for me to use as a repeater in either wds or wap mode?
If you can give me like 2-3 recommendations, I'd greatly appreciate it.

if moneys are not a problem and you have a cable connecting the units for WAP than any decent unit will do like R7000
as WAP mode is like a switch with WI-FI and all the rest is disabled on the unit so no routing no nothing to bug on..or drain resources..
I personally prefer WAP mode but you'd need a wire between the units...
WAP mode is much more worry free than WDS...as well regarding compatibility any DD-WRT supporting unit will do...
Netgear R7000 (AC & NG mixed) wi-fi speeds
Netgear R7800 (AC & NG mixed) wi-fi speeds
TP-Link WR1043NDv2 or v3 (NG mixed only) wi-fi speeds
tried all those units for WAP all ware working great _________________ Atheros

Thank you sir for the great reply.
I'd like to do WAP because it sounds headache-free, but running a cable is difficult in certain situations. I'd like to use the powerline->ethernet adapters ( ethernet through wall sockets), but I wonder if these work for multiple connections? For example, can 5-8 sets of the powerline->ethernet adapters all work at the same time? Or can this only be done 1 time (1 set of the adapters running) in a home or office?
told ya to use powerline adaptors...yep as many as you want if so most of them can do up to 4-6 nodes or more...just make sure they are on the same circuit..
sadly the once i used in the past ware 200Mbit max but
i guess nowadays they got faster i haven't got any idea
as i dont use them anymore... _________________ Atheros
