Well I myself took Mojo’s advice, and picked up Two Asus 86u’s on sale May 1st, and all I can say Wow!!!
They have been running flawlessly, other than to take down to update Merlin.
I only wish I knew this before wasting all my time with the Wrt 3200acm.
Thanks Mojo

Mark

Totally agree.
At least I was able to find someone who wanted another wrt3200 so do not have that bad reminder still around on shelf. Guess I could have taken a hammer to to as well. Wink

I wish I ran across this thread as well. I have only myself to blame since i was reading various product reviews instead of coming here first.

Anyway, once I save up some cash to get a different router, this WRT3200ACM may go to the shooting range with me and come home with a few holes in it. (I try to be very responsible and clean up after myself.)

I too wish I would have known the history of the WRT3200ACM before making the investment in it.

Unplugged the WRT3200ACM from the network for its final time yesterday and put an Asus RT-5300 ( Of course with Merlin ) in its place.

The RT-5300 been a complete and total DREAM compared to the nightmares I have had with the WRT3200ACM. Got an uber sweet deal on the RT-5300, used still in the box, 100.00! No joke not kidding, 100.00

May keep the WRT around for Development purposes only other than that its more than likely off to craigslist, or even better the shooting range as mentioned above....

Good Luck to all and Many thanks to Brainslayer for all his hard work, but unfortunately its time to call it quits for me on the 3200ACM...

It has been almost 4 years of ups and downs but I'm finally replacing my WRT1900ACv1.

I got a lot of solid, stable time out of it thanks to DD-WRT but I haven't been able to update DD-WRT in over a year because of the general lack of compatibility. It looked like this week BS finally had a new build that would be stable (it is for many people) but it hosed my router twice and I had to give up and go back.

I've tried Asus (with and without RMerlin) before and I've become pretty attached to DD-WRT so I went with the Netgear R7800, although after my experience with the R7000 and their tech support, I swore I'd never buy Netgear again...

Some day I will make the leap to a prosumer setup. I almost pulled the trigger on Ubiquiti this time but $150 and DD-WRT just seemed like the better choice over $500+ and having to completely re-learn network management and re-design my network.

I did it, I pulled a bunch of old parts together around an i5-2400 4 core processor, small older laptop ssd, and put pfsense on it. AC86Us are APs and bridges now, There is some doubt even on Merlins forum about how open the vendors are going to be, I am done being at their mercy.

thanks for this community, and BS & KONG, tx very much for your persistent support.

outta here.

Now you can kick it up another notch by installing LEDE on the r7800. Runs really sweet. Hynman's LEDE builds just install and work. Provides a neat pie chart showing individual bandwidth usage.

I am running the master branch. Only downside is you need to get the first image on using tftp.
