Hello,
I've got an Asus RT-N66U router on my network. It's the b1 variant. Currently it's running dd-wrt firmware v35927 filename:
dd-wrt.v24-35927_NEWD-2_K3.x-big-RT-N66U.trx
Specifically from the dd-wrt info page it's:
DD-WRT v3.0-r35927 big (05/13/18)
Everything is working great except i'm having an issue with guest networks. I've followed several tutorials on them, links below. When I have the guest network enabled this is on the 2.4 band, I do not have a 5ghz guest, sometimes the primary network doesn't show up at all, only the guest. In this case when atempting to connect to the guest the connection is not successful, even though it's an open network. The connection just hangs. In the cases in which the primary network shows up, the guest network does not, and connections are made to the primary network, but the primary is unstable it has a very weak signal.
My temporary fix is to disable the wl0.1 interface, that gets me a stable primary network with good signal and good security. I need the guest functionality as I want to allow users on to that not the primary. I also have other uses of the guest see below.
I've tried both a bridged and unbridged configurations, dnsmasq is the dhcp/dns server. Links:
These two links are different in how they do things, currently I've got the guest network on wl0.1, unbridged, enabled both net isolation and AP isolation, obviously nat, and gave that interface a separate ip range than the primary network. When it works, by that I mean both primary and guest network show up, it only lasts for a few minutes, then one of them drops off, during the time where they're both showing up the connections to the guest go through.
I've noticed a new firmware build:
dd-wrt.v24-36104_NEWD-2_K3.x-big-RT-N66U.trx
I'm a little concerned, but if this fixes the issue i'll go for it. When upgrading from 32170 I went to a build that had both of the wireless radios disabled, it would only work as a switch, that prompted the upgrade to 35927.
I'd appreciate any suggestions I need to get this guest network up, stable, and working. My goal is to put QoS on only the guest network as well as a chillispot captive portal again only on the guest.
If any additional information is needed let me know.
Thanks.
Is your N66U the main gateway router, or an access point?
Thanks. I've read the provided wiki link when I first started with guest networks, it's not helping with the issue of the signal and the SSIDs not broadcasting consistently when both primary and guest network is enabled.
In answer to your question the wireless mode for both 2.4 and 5GHz is set to AP I'm assuming we're talking access point. I've got the internet with a cable modem and a cable going from that to the WAN port on the N66U if that helps.
Thanks.
Dave.

Ah, that is normal gateway (as in, to the internet, thru the WAN, using a firewall) mode. Technically it would be GW+AP, but we don't refer to things that way.
As for you issues, BS made some nas changes that he hopes will fix VAP (guest) issues, so try the next build when it is out. _________________ #NAT/SFE/CTF: limited speed w/ DD#Repeater issues#DD-WRT info: FAQ, Builds, Types, Modes, Changes, Demo#
