Hi,

I am new here.
I read lots of post but can't find the information I am looking for so I need your help. Thanks in advance.

I am using a very old ADSL router (Sagem F@ST 2504) from my ISP (Sky-UK) which has a built-in modem (I think). Because it was not working properly today my ISP sent me a new router, the SR102 Sky Hub, but I read it's not that good also...

So my aim is to buy a new router which can be flashed with DD-WRT firmware. I read on Internet with fibre connection it seems to be possible BUT my connection is a standard ADSL and so I am not sure if I can.

I don't want to have a dual router set up by adding another router alongside my actual ADSL router. I'd like to have only one router. Is it possible? If so, which router that can be flashed with DD-WRT would you recommend in my situation?

The main reason I want to use DD-WRT is to be able to throttle the bandwidth of my children by their IP or MAC address...

Hi eibgrad. Thanks for the quick reply.

as long as the device supports bridge mode [...] your own router will become the primary router and be assigned the public IP

But in that case I'll have 2 routers. Can't I avoid that??

Can you please recommend a website where I can search for a router that supports bridge mode and that is compatible with DD-WRT firmware?

Also how can I check if my ISP refuses bridge mode capabilities before buying the new router? Preferably without asking my ISP this question.

I wanted to avoid to have 2 devices but it seems that it's not possible...
Thank you for your detailed reply.
It's a bit complicate for me. I need some time to think about.

Hi Alozaros, thanks for the input.

So on your setup, you have a Huawei Echolife HG61 provided by BT as an ADSL router/modem combo, and then connected to it, there is the TP-Link WR1043ND that you bought separately to be used with DD-WRT. Correct?

With what Eibgrad shared and what you are saying if I understand the situation for people who have an ADSL connection there is no other way than adding a second device to the main router provided by the ISP in order to be able to use DD-WRT. Am I correct?

well, Huawei Echolife HG61 is a DSL modem only, and has a WAN port out, witch requires PPPoE interface from the router side...
so the ISP router has it as well DD-WRT has it, so i decided to replace the crappy BT Home hub(router) and use only my DD-WRT router instead...so i guess Huawei Echolife HG61(modem) is in kind of a bridge mode and i can see full speed ahead..so there is no double NAT in this case...
but if you want to connect directly to the Huawei Echolife HG61 (modem) WAN port, you may need PPPoE client for PC or similar...as the standard WAN interface in WAN is either static or dynamic IP
