That's great! Glad you got it working.

I'm saving that command you used. Mr. Green

the syntax for setenv from the u-boot serial console has no equal sign between the environement variable name and the value you wish to assign. you should add single quotes around assigned strings that have special characters and spaces in them.

see this thread for details about converting wrt3200acm to wrt32x and back:
https://forum.lede-project.org/t/linksys-wrt32x-openwrt-based-firmware-wrt3200acm-crossflash/6730
the process is basically changing the uboot environment strings.
the strings for wrt32x are in that post. assuming that you did not overwrite the uboot loader, then you just have to correct your uboot environment to the wrt32x environment variable strings.

you should be able to do this from an openwrt/dd-wrt console using the fw_setenv command.

a good reference for setenv and fw_setenv is here:
https://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/techref/bootloader/uboot.config

Before I began test flashing DD-WRT images to my WRT32X I made a backup of MTD.
I outlined the steps and put a copy of the backup script on Page #11 of this Thread.

It gave me a ZIP File named mtd_backup.tgz.
*See attached Screenshot for file contents.

Here are my questions:
How does one restore from this backup?
Would it be a mtd write command?
Can it be restored via SSH or Serial only?

Thanks in advance! Mr. Green

4 Summary Questions for this thread please?

1. Can DD-WRT v36006 be flashed successfully onto WRT32X?

2. Does it work like WRT3200ACM?

3. Besides the plastics, is the hardware for the WRT32X vs WRT3200ACM identical and the differentiator is only the factory OS (& wi-fi driver)?

4. Should I buy a WRT32X to replace my 1900AC_V1 or wait for the WRT4000 or whatever WRT is next?

Technically yes, but you would need a serial cable. For the average user - not yet.

The hardware is the same and the differences are in how an open-source image is compiled.

That is what I did. I have LEDE/OpenWRT running on both. Now that the developers of LEDE/OpenWRT have nailed down the build for the WRT32X and fixed the WRT1900AC v1 reboot issue, my plan is to use both with WDS.

Thanks for the summary.

I have however noticed an improvement of auto reboots with v36006 and WAN DHCP requests being completed (was timing out). Would like to get away from WRT1900AC_v1 hardware if the hang/reboot (Linux Kernel?) issue cannot be resolved.

The reboot issue on the WRT1900AC v1 was discovered to be caused by the CPU Idle. This feature has since been disabled in LEDE/OpenWRT.

If you want to try it out you can download the latest build here:
https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/targets/mvebu/cortexa9/

EDIT: Sorry! I put the wrong link above. Those are daily snapshot builds. Here is correct link:

I just posted a detailed write up on how to successfully install DD-WRT or OpenWRT on WRT32x without having to open your unit and use a USB to TTL cable. Take a look the steps are fairly simple. Hope that helps.

I bit the bullet and went ahead and tried to flash the latest r36104 FW_WRT32X_1.0.666_DDWRT.img and as expected after about 30 seconds: Firmware upload failed

Until DD-WRT is ready for the WRT32X, LEDE/OpenWRT is performing extremely well.
There's a 'learning curve' if you're unfamiliar with it, but it's easy enough to figure out and there are plenty of guides.

For a complete build ready to go out the box:
https://davidc502sis.dynamic-dns.net/releases/#32x

*The lede-mvebu-cortexa9-linksys-wrt32x-squashfs-factory.img is for first time installation from Linksys Venom GUI.

I went with the latest Development Snapshot Build here:
https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/targets/mvebu/cortexa9/

*You will have to install the LEDE/OpenWRT GUI (LuCI) manually via SSH.
The first time you access the new firmware via SSH just enter the following commands:

opkg update
opkg install luci

and then

/etc/init.d/uhttpd start
/etc/init.d/uhttpd enable

LuCI Installation Guide:

Quick Start Guide:
https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-quick-start/begin_here

User's Guide:

Just a quick note about DavidC502's OpenWRT/Lede firmware release. I had an opportunity to try this out today for the first time. His contributions to creating and maintaining his release are quite impressive. However, please note that his factory.img file for the WRT32X is a "ubinize'd" file. That means that there is no way to perform a Venom GUI or secure shell sysupgrade process using that file. Consequently, his image will allow you to successfully perform a partition flash from the Venom U-Boot environment (this requires a serial cable to issue the commands).

The benefit of using the Development Snapshot Build of OpenWRT is that there is an upgrade process that doesn't require you to open up your WRT32X unit and use a serial cable to upgrade. The only downside of this build, as @spuriousoffspring indicates below, is that you will have to manually install the LuCI (web GUI) if you don't want to set up OpenWRT from the Linux command line.

I wasn't aware that the Davidc502 builds could not be flashed from Venom GUI. Sad

When I upgraded my WRT32X I did so via serial because I had the USB-TTL cable already hooked up.
After a week or so on his build I decided I wanted to have the stock Venom firmware on one partition (in anticipation of DD-WRT) so I used the
FW_WRT32X_1.0.170919.nonjenkins-inteliboy-1619.img
to serial flash back to stock (both partitions). File can be found here:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=315339&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=30

Afterwards I flashed the latest SNAPSHOT from Venom GUI, installed LuCI and relevant packages. Easy!

It's my firm belief that anyone who uses Open Source firmware, even casually, should have a USB-TTL cable on hand.
