Hey all. Been on the fence for the past few months now with all this net neutrality etc... and decided I really should just go ahead and get a VPN service.. thing is. So many reviews left and right saying whats what.. So Ill come here to see what others maybe using with their Kong FW.

Looking to use this VPN within the OpenVPN settings of the router. (I assume thats the best way to do this?)

Kodi, Torrent, Websites would be the main focus here. Maybe the ability to install it on my ipad too for when I travel.

I saw PureVPN being the cheapest.. and some areas say thats the best while others say its horrid?

Then NordVPN seems more pricy, then Private Internet Access VPN was another I read up on.

Any assistance from a community I can trust would be great. Thanks.

I've been using PIA with Kong's builds on am R7000 for a fair few years now. Every time that the subscription has come up for renewal, I've checked the market and can't see a good reason to change. That's why I've opted for a 2 year deal this time.

I'm sure there are other viable alternatives out there. I just haven't signed up with another provider, so I can't offer actual comparative advice.

Ok so far with everyone saying PIA. Thats a good sign.

So I know many of these say "5 devices" Now Ill assume dd-wrt would just allow the entire house be connected through the VPN without any issues or internet slowdowns right?

Ill also assume for online gaming as well this is still great? Or should I set things up separately with their own clients?

Yes you can set up VPN on the router, keep in mind that it is very CPU intensive, I have my VPN running on a Netgear R6400 dual core Arm A9 800 MHz and it will get me not more than 40Mb/s, normally with SFE it will do almost 600 Mb/s.

I use Policy Based Routing, where you specify which clients are routed through the VPN and which use the WAN based on the clients IP address.

One of the fastest VPN routers is a Netgear R7800 it is rumored to do around 300Mb/s

I use ExpressVPn on a TP-link router with DD-WRT
It works great, but the build I'm running doesn't start the VPN on boot.
You have to hit apply settings after boot to stat the VPN.
Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r35767 std (04/19/18)
on TP-Link Archer C9 V1 router.
:D

So by adding the VPN to the router itself, I would hurt my download speeds? Did I read that right? Which case would mean its better to do things on the client side?

You will still lose speed do to encryption, and the servers ,and traffic along with may other factors.

You either want fast, or secure, the only way you will get both is to pump up your speed at your ISP.
I run 100mbps and get a bottom line of 18mbps a second, enough to do anything I want, and I also have two other other clients on the router. I doesn't matter where, you will still get the speed reduction that's what I got from my experience dealing with VPN.

I play Battlefield 1 with no problems on ExpressVPN no problems, a ping larger than usual.
But if it too high you change VPN servers to get closer to the gaming server. Very Happy

If you have the money or a spare router run VPN as a secondary router. I use the VPN router for privacy and the main router for speed and Amazon and Netflix. It easier for me. I'm not savvy enough for PBR and VPN yet, although I've been studying up on it.

fwiw I use NordVPN. Speeds are OK (pay for 60Mbps get ~30-35 w/VPN on average), plenty of servers to choose, and are supposedly based out of Panama. No complaints, but it's the only one I've every used so nothing to compare to.

You got me thinking, I wounder if I could port forward, without encryption on a certain port, and use VPN on all the other ports.
Time for some research.
A second router would be a great alternative, that would set me up for an extender for the wireless.

Well right now I am on a 300 Mbps ISP plan.

I wouldnt mind having the VPN as an option, but speed is nice. Smile So maybe just need to install the VPN directly on the fire stick and then have as an option for my main PC when I need it.

Now that idea of using ports to toggle on and off.. that would be interesting to hear about.

Do your research. IPVanish you can install directly on Firestick. Other one's like NordVPN will not install directly on last time I checked.
