HI I just installed r35681 though came accross some issues

I started with factory-to-ddwrt.bin seemed to go ok but at the end the router didn't reboot

I lest it for an hour and got the router to reboot via ssh, and then installed ddwrt-linksys-wrt1900acsv2-webflash.bin
which went as expected

do I still need to install factory-to-ddwrt.bin there seems to be differing views on this

Kind regards

factory to dd-wrt was the only one needed.

You use the webflash version only with newer versions.

You probably did not read the stickies of this forum.

Factory to ddwrt is for flashing from the Linksys firmware UI. The webflash is for flashing from within the dd-wrt UI. Read the threads in my sig to understand this router, its two partitions, and lots of other good stuff. Had you read them you would not be asking this question as you would know.
By the way, since you flashed the factory to ddwrt and then then webflash, I assume from within dd-wrt UI you have overwritten both Linksys partitions.

Probably too much out of date youtube vids on this, which mostly recommend you use both images

I'm about to go to the latest will try using the
ddwrt-linksys-wrt1900acsv2-webflash.bin this time

Thanks anyway

When I was doing the WRT's I always flashed from the Linksys partition using the factory-to-ddwrt file. No you do not need to do the webflash after installing the factory-to-ddwrt file. In fact if you do you will overlay the Linksys firmware. Did this process for over 3 years with various WRT's without any issues.
