Unfortunately the Madison Heights (Detroit) Micro Center location leaves me with PTSD. Got hit outside of it about 3 weeks ago in a 3 week old car (< 2000 miles on the ODO). I was waiting at a red light to turn to get onto 75 at 9:00 at night, and some guy in a pickup truck was looking at his phone and ran right into my stopped car.
At least he was honorable and we both pulled over to the Sprint store and waited for the cops to arrive. I'm still waiting to get my car back from the shop (the shop was backed up).

How do you find it?
Have to say the firmware is a thing of beauty with stock and merlin as everything you could ever need is there but the one thing that lets it down for me is i can't get the same speeds when sharing a USB 3 drive over WiFi, with Asus it sit's at around 35mbs but with Linksys it's just under 55mbs on good day speeds via ethernet are the same about 102mbs
Have tried playing with all the Asus settings but can't match the Linksys speed
Plus it also looks like a decapitated transformer _________________ | Netgear Nighthawk X4S R7800 | Linksys WRT1900ACS V1 | Huawei Echolife HG612 3B |
I see a lot of mention about the RT-AC86U. What about the RT-AC88U? Seems to have better wireless performance (according to specs) I'm very close to replacing my WRT3200ACM and want to make sure I'm getting the right one this time.

R7800 is likely my next router after the R7000. They can now be had refurb for $130 instead of the $200 new price.
I really want to like the RT-AC86U, especially with SmallNetworkBuilder tests so good and there is Merlin to fall back on (granted Netgear has Merlin based Xwrt-Vortex). USB Storage performance is very important to me and R7000 is lacking there. But I just can't stand (pun intended) the way the Asus sit upright, don't want a router like that.
So the R7800 is next if DD-WRT support keeps up. Mainly because the Wrt3200ACM has proven so unreliable with poor open source support (bad Wi-Fi drivers with drops, no power output control, lack of CTF support, etc.).

If you hate the way the RT-AC86U stands up, look at the RT-AC88U. https://goo.gl/zcPpBH
Reading this thread and after LookingForMyMojo's wife hammered the Linksys make me honestly want to pass to asus too. Lost entire days trying to connect the wrt54gl as a repeater bridge to the wrt1200ac but i didn't suceed except with some super old firmware. The thing is that i need to cover more space in my house cause my wife wanna hit me too as the signal doesnt arrive to her office but i dont want a wireless extender thing (half bandwidth, big pings, etc ).
Checked the RT-AC86U seems a bomb but the cost is forbidden for me at 230eu per unit. Found on amazon.com the AC-1900 from T-mobile at 48$ per piece that seemed that i can flash to the RT-AC68U . For 2 devices shippings costs and customs as i live in Europe , it will cost me around 130 eu for 2 units. Seems fair. Also its the most cheap way to try the mesh network but i should stay on asus firmware and not on Merlin. Does someone know if the asus default firmware has the possibility to set a vpn with policy based routing and have firewall scipts with iptables or is it a must to flash Merlin? Also if i put Merlin can i connect the routers through WDS ? Any suggestions ?

checkout RMerlin on the forum, ask those questions there. But I will tell you, any newer Asus router running RMerlin will outperform anything else.

Thanx for the reply man! Merlin is definitely better than asus stock ! Also from what i understood right now mesh networks are in general slow. Merlin offers a media bridge from what i saw that provides Wi-Fi connection to the Ethernet-enabled devices. WDS connects the repeater with the clients with wire and supports wep..I checked all the options and i think at the end i will go with Ubiquiti . A Unify Gateway and how many APs i want depending the needs.
For Asus or rmerlin firmware on the tm-ac1900 read this thread https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2693988
Don’t ask on the smallnetbulder forum. It is verboten. _________________ I am far from a guru, I'm barely a novice.

Well I myself took Mojo’s advice, and picked up Two Asus 86u’s on sale May 1st, and all I can say Wow!!!
They have been running flawlessly, other than to take down to update Merlin.
I only wish I knew this before wasting all my time with the Wrt 3200acm.
Thanks Mojo
