mrjcd, just curious... is there a reason why you're using HFSC with FQ_CODEL instead of HTB?
There's some conflicting info out there about this, but what I remember finding on bufferbloat.com was that HFSC was the better coded packet handler. Then through trial and error of combinations I have found that HFSC gave better qos performance. HFSC seems to react faster than HTB.
Rum some tests on your connection. If it's a faster 75mbps+ d/l you should be able to see that HFSC provides better scores at dslreports.com/speedtest.

our hfsc is more broken than htb for high speeds & wifi (some broken overhead calculation looks like) on ipq806x both k3.x & 4.x, the load is absurdly high even with max cpu freq locked. our htb had a little more bandaids applied to it from kong than hfsc. when both are equal, update, & router platform actually runs properly etc, hfsc is theoretically, supposedly better _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)

Thanks mrjcd and tatsuya for the feedback. I'd love to use HFSC since it's supposedly lower resource demanding than HTB and better implemented in linux. But in my usage it seems that HTB is better, which is now explained why by tatsuya:)

Well, I just ran some new tests between HFSC and HTB on Kong's 35030 V3 and sure enough HTB performed better than HFSC.
I'm going to leave it on HTB for a while and do more tests over the coming days.
I know that when I ran these tests before I was using BS's builds exclusively and never went back and played with HFSC vs. HTB on Kong's builds.
So for Kong it appears HTB FQ_Codel is the best performance on my router on this day...
Yesterday I decided to upgrade my EA8500 since it’s been a while. I’d have been running older BS version but figured I’d upgraded to Kong’s r35550M. I took the reset option and for whatever reason decided to flash the other partition. After the second flash the EA8500 went into a boot loop, I couldn’t access the device via the web interface and all I could see was the top Linksys LED slowing flashing which would imply it was rebooting. To stop the rebooting process I powered it off/on a few times then I was able to get in. I then tried to do an erase nvram then the prompt came back stating "erase nvram command is deprecated, please use nvram erase" so I did. Probably nothing to do with the problem but something new I had not seen before.
In any case since I have two EA8500’s to better understand if it was the build or the device itself I defaulted the second unit and flashed with r35550M and no problem at that point. Then once again logged in with new password and username and flashed the second partition and the result was the same, the #2 EA8500 went into a boot loop until I disconnected the power. Anyone else see this behavior? In the meantime I rolled back to r33772, needless to say I flashed both partitions on both EA8500’s and no boot loop

Has anyone else tried the latest Kong?
After reading on other topics about the issue of NVRAM size, I wasn't sure if I should try the latest kong build? Not sure if Kong has the NVRAM size change like BS builds now do? I've been staying away from anything BS until I hear that the K4.+ kernel latency issues are fixed-Not holding my breath...this issue will take a while to shake out.
Not to mention the post above saying if you have the 35550 build on both partitions that it will boot loop. I'm afraid to try updating my Kong 35030 from 2-19-18.
@MRJCD- what are you running these days? I see you've played with some BS builds lately.

I'm interested in putting DD-WRT on my EA8500 but I'm having trouble trying to get through the first few steps... opening it!
Do you guys know the best way to open the router? I removed the 4 rubber feet and unscrewed the screws but am having a difficult time trying to pry the top part off. It just seems nearly impossible and I'm also trying to use a bunch of plastic cards to keep it slightly open as well. Hopefully it's not as hard as I'm making it out to be...

You will need to use a thin flat head screwdriver or a thin, yet sturdy, piece of plastic to wedge it between the top lip of the cover and the bottom wall. The cover uses molded plastic retention wedges directly on the cover. I recall starting to pry the cover loose at one of the backside corners and sliding the flathead towards to other back corner. You'll need the pry loose a few of the wedge interfaces and then the whole cover will let loose.
It will seem like you're going to snap the plastic cover, just be forcefully gentle. The first wedge or two are the hardest to get pried up. Use something to help you shim open the cover as you work the screw driver.
I had a set of old iPod pry tools I used get the cover off.

You can flash DD-WRT between Kong and BS with no issue. Kong builds are the better one's to use as of late.
I wouldn't run anything from BS newer than from December 4th 2017. 12-04-2017-r33986 is the last build to use Linux Kernerl 3.18 which is stable. Newer BS builds are using kernel 4.9+ and have terrible WAN performance.
Kong has been sticking to K3.18 in all his latest builds.
I, personally, am still using his DD-WRT v3.0-r35030M kongat (02/19/1 build. There are several newer versions since. The latest one archived by MRJCD is Kong's 34800 build from 2/7/18. http://mrjcd.com/Malachi/KONG-EA8500/
I haven't seen anyone post anything on this specific thread since February with decent results, and MRJCD has been off doing other things and hasn't made any comments in this thread since Feb about good builds.
It all depends on the services you, or the new owner, wants to take advantage of. I suggest trying the last build MRJCD has archived and see how the router performs. Extra Kudos to you if you point the new buyer to this forum and specific thread.

I've only been testing BS builds but of those new builds 3/20/2018 and 3/26/2018--in terms of functionality they are lacking sftp but things like ipv6/ddns/bridging/openvpn(ipv4 and ipv6)/SMB/usb HD/upnp/qos they seem fine. They do have some syslog spam which I think the newest 4/4/2018 release has as well.
The last rock solid one I've seen with great performance and everything working (for me) was 12/4/2017.

Thanks for the heads up moonglows, mine should be tomorrow and I'm looking forward to putting it thru some paces.
I myself need a good wireless network, which is non existent on my Wrt3200Acm with the (Unmarvellous chipset). lol
I found a post over in Marvell land that led me here, and from what I've read the EA8500 might have one of the best wireless radios out there at this time, and the price point is had to beat! for under $100 dollars.
