Can I take a stock 32X, SCP the factory-to-ddwrt.bin over, and run a command to flash it? Instead of the GUI upgrade?

update

I have a black stock WRT32X

I have tried the GUI flash - natrually doesnt work
I have tried TFTP factory-to-ddwrt.bin over - times out

SCP factory-to-ddwrt-bin :/tmp works and file is there

sysupgrade -v -f -F works and SAYS success - but router never reboots or is accessible.

triple power successfully restores it back

dont know what else to try

any suggestions ideas or bashing is fine..lol

I contacted Linksys Support and I am waiting on a call-back.

I'm fairly sure that the Linksys WRT32X firmware has a safety feature that blocks unrecognized files from being uploaded via Linksys GUI.
If this turns out to be the case the fix will have to come from their end and should.

@ghoffman: i can confirm NOT flashing from gui. i've needed to scp the file to a folder on the router, then use sysupgrade

Exactly how you achieved this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I spoke with someone from the WRT32X Linksys Support Team. She says that there is nothing in the WRT32X Firmware that would prevent the installation of any 3rd party Firmware.

I'm not completely convinced that this isn't on their end, but I hope I'm wrong. Will be much easier to get a solution if we don't have to rely on Linksys Support.

I submitted a Ticket so hopefully Brainslayer can figure out what's happening.

Ticket # 6041:

I have been working with this router for a few days now, same experience with flashing DD-WRT through Venom and via SCP. I'd love to get DD-WRT on here for a VPN server, and also to hopefully try a different WiFi driver...

I have been having issues with WiFi, both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. I have roughly a total of 35 devices connected between wired and WiFi, and I can sit there and watch groups of 5, 10, 15 or more devices disconnect and reconnect multiple times within a minute. The devices themselves don't show disconnecting, so maybe it is just a routing table issue? I also cant get a smooth stream on either band of WiFi. I have a 150Mbps connection, but ALL video is jerky and stutters or disconnects altogether. I thought I might have had a defective device, so it was exchanged with the same results. The channels have been changed and I have tried forcing different standards (n/g/ac). My network was fine with my five year old Nighthawk R7000. I also had issues with all gen 2 LiFx bulbs not responding, gen 3 was fine. Again, both gen 2 and 3 worked fine with Nighthawk.

I am waiting for Linksys Devs to call me back, as the WRT32x tech support team elevated the case Friday. Hopefully there will be a firmware update soon...

sorry my friend, don't hold your breath. they will keep stringing you along, long enough that you can't return it.

I was able to figure out the OpenVPN Client in the Venom Firmware.
It will not work unless the CA Certificate is included in the OPVN File.

You can use Notepad++ to edit the OPVN File and simply paste the CA CERT.

Notepad++ can be downloaded for free here:
https://notepad-plus-plus.org/

Note: Make sure the CA CERT is preceded by: <ca> and followed by: </ca>

Also, make sure to change your DNS Servers from ISP to a 3rd Party (OpenDNS, Google, etc...)

I have attached an example of an edited IPVanish OPVN File that works with Venom Firmware.

There are a few problems that I have made Linksys Support aware of:
IPv6 Leak
No OpenVPN Logs
Doesn't disconnect properly

*When I get solutions - I'll post em.

Stringing me along? Very Happy
Only took a year to get a mostly working wireless driver.

OF COURSE that should have been available at launch of 3rd party firmware or shortly there after, not a year or more. Sad

For me the last few builds from Brainslayer have worked well. However, I do not do anything fancy like VPN or NAS support just routing and wireless support. No Samsung phones so no issue there for me.

On their web site they claim open source ready Additional Information:
"Open Source ready for OpenWrt"
Probably says that on the box you have as well. Wink
So in theory you should be able to flash it with 3rd party, but folks do not seem to be able to get dd-wrt to install normal way through Linksys UI. That could be either a Linksys issue or a dd-wrt issue. I have not seen where Brainslayer has stated that the firmware for the wrt32x will load and work.

I am still fairly certain the inability to load DD-WRT via Linksys GUI is a problem on Linksys's end. The only variable between the WRT3200ACM and the WRT32X is the custom Venom Firmware.
My quess is that there has to be a special safety block in the Firmware Upload that prevents potentially harmful files from being introduced.

I've spoken to two different people on the WRT32X Linksys Support Team over the past two days. The first told me that there is no such safety feature.
I spent a good deal more time with the second. He verified the problem on their test unit. He also said that it's possible that the problem is on their end.
I should be getting more information from him after he gets a response from the Engineering Department.

*I really hope that this doesn't turn into a $hit show where Linksys refuses to acknowledge that this may be their fault and just blames DD-WRT!

As for the IPv6 Leak, a feature request has been submitted to add a Disable IPv6 selection in the Venom GUI.

I'm still playing around with my WRT32X, but as soon as DD-WRT is able to flash - I will do so.
Like pretty much everyone else here, I prefer more control and options than the Venom Firmware (or any stock firmware) provides.

maybe is not.
factory-to-ddwrt.bin for wrt32x , which is in sysupgrade format, is differnt from factory-to-ddwrt.bin for wrt3200acm.
for wrt32x you can open factory-to-ddwrt.bin with 7zip and see the kernel and rootfs.
factory-to-ddwrt.bin for wrt32acm is a flashable image.
to convert wrt32x factory-to-ddwrt.bin to a flashable image see my post :

if i will have time and helps you, i can make a image for you.

While that looks like it'd be fun to figure out and I would love to learn how to do it - especially since I have zero Linux experience, no way am I attempting that on a one week old $300 router.

Why is the WRT32X 'factory to dd-wrt' in a different format?

If you replaced your WRT1900AC v1 for a WRT32X then you'll appreciate the irony:

The WRT32X stock firmware has the 4.4 Kernel.
