After wading through all 17 pages here, I felt a real sense of disappointment at the end that all that effort seems to have come to nothing. I'm using a Sitecom WL-351 myself and would really have appreciated a dd-wrt build to fix some of the bigger holes in the official firmware.
One problem I have is that the firmware won't allow me to hard-code a WAN address... without some bizarre message that the ip address is invalid because it's not on the same subnet as the "current" one (whatever current means!). I have the LAN address set to 192.168.1.3 (we have a rather odd network setup with some parts controlled by our ISP) but the WAN address seems to default to 172.1.1.1 (our own external address is nothing like that and none of our internal addresses for gateway, DNS or anything else look anything like that!).
I also can't get the router to forward incoming traffic correctly (although this might be something in the setup of the equipment our ISP supplies and controls...). Whatever, I can't ssh to the office from home anymore!
I was thinking of giving the fw uploaded by Kroligoff a try (thanks Kroligoff!) but am guessing I'd need to tweak bytes 6 and 7 (or 7 and 8, depending whether you start counting from 0 or 1)? Does anyone have any positive experience with this firmware on the Sitecom-badged device?
Thanks in advance for all help, information, tips...
I make again special version of Firmware for ESR9850
+Enabled Telnet
+Enabled hidden settings (bridge lan , etc)
===========
utelnet started only for br0 (lan+wifi) interface,but not for WAN
and used port 25
example: telnet 192.168.xx.1 25
I tried this firmware on my ESR-9850 that was recently retired from service.
Can't get telnet to work. Port 25 is not open per a port scan. Can see the hidden commands from web interface.
Anybody else had any luck with it?

While DD-WRT seems to be a no-go with this router, the thing (in the guise of a Sitecom WLR-4000 v1.001) happily runs OpenWRT here. While not a turn-key install like DD-WRT (especially for this router, as the default OpenWRT install needs to be changed to get it to work) the result is a lot more versatile - just install what you want, leave what you don't need, edit config files by hand or through one of the web interfaces, etc. No need for optware, no need to fight the web interface.
I used the most recent release, it ´works for me' (after getting it to work, that is). Have some stock firmware around in case it doesn't work for you.

Old post, but I'm working on my old 351 again.. I have a question: how to flash the stock firmware back? (two dlf files)
@EthanThompson Yes, quite disappointed. I bought the ESR9850 due to the great review on SmallNetBuilder. In the future, I will buy only those devices with good, existing 3rd party firmware support. Tired of waiting..
