I have a r7000 that is completly bricked, i cannot get it to restore/unbrick.

Router boots up to amber lights then goes white, it does show activity when an ethernet cable is connected on any port. I cannot ping to it, it does nothing when you push the reset button, i tried Kong guide over myopenrouter http://myopenrouter.com/article/how-debrick-or-recover-netgear-r7000-r6300v2-or-r6250-wi-fi-routers?page=1 and it was a not go. here is my log from putty... any helps is welcome, i have not internet! You could try to tftp it using the manufacturer firmware if you haven't already done so.

Stop the boot up by hitting control and c at the same time. After stopping the cfe, type tftpd, it will ask for firmware, use tftp2.exe or tftpd32 by jourin.

Yes, you have to stop it at the CFE prompt. The way that I did it was to hit ctrl-C pretty much continuously after turning on the router power. That managed to catch it in the right place.

The other thing that I found was that I needed to restart the serial process after a certain point. I'm not sure what that point was, but I was pretty sure to catch it one or two tries after restarting the process. I caught the CFE prompt by shear luck the first or second time through the power-up boot, but blew something else (had forgotten to connect the PC to the router LAN port *smile*).

Then I wasn't able to catch the CFE prompt again until I restarted the whole process. By restarting the process I mean stopping the putty terminal, unplugging the serial USB thing from your computer, plugging the USB thingie back in and restarting the putty. That may just have been me, but that was my experience.

And make sure that you've given the PC that you're using a static IP address, like 192.168.1.106. The static address needs to be in the same subnet as your router, and not the ".1" address.

One more thing, the tftp takes longer than you think, so once you do get to the CFE prompt and start the tftpd process on the router, give the tftp process from the computer to the router time, don't figure that because it's been 10 seconds that it didn't work.

Oh yeah, I just used the tftp that comes with Windows 8.1 on my PC. You add it into the default Windows 8.1 install by using "Programs and Features" in the Control Panel, "Turn Windows features on or off".

Just stay with it, if everything's right, and the moon's in the right phase, it'll work for you, too. I just did this the other day, and if I can do it, anyone can *smile*. I'm a very persistent person, and persistence furthers for this one.

Still cannot interrupt startup process by spamming ctrl+c keys after connecting power. Router keeps rebooting continuously. Problem started after flashing straight from Netgear web interface using latest xwrt firmware.

Ran into an issue that'll help you. PuTTY wouldn't let me interrupt to goto the CFE turns it it was because of "flow control". Make your serial look like this and it should let you interrupt.

Thanks for your response and sorry for the late reply. I have tried disabling software/hardware flow but that didn't help. I used Auto Keyboard to automatically input ctrl-c but that didn't work as well.

Looks like I'm alone on this one. After the load default message, the router reboots. The startup stop command does not seem to work.

It does nothing because there is no dd-wrt on it. Whatever you installed it probably does not support the reset button. LOL

If you get output without beeing able to break at the cfe prompt, then you did not connect the pins correctly.

Sorry to bump an old threat but this is the exact problem I have at the moment with an R6250. I've tried different keyboards, and crossing the Tx and Rx pins of the serial cable to make sure it echoes out what I type in the console so I can confirm that putty is accepting input from the keyboard. I've tried switching the Tx and Rx connections on the pinouts on the board, to see if i had them the wrong way round but then i dont get any output in putty so I know ive got them the right way round otherwise i wouldn't be able to see the boot process.

Did you ever manage to resolve this?

What does ctrl+c show up in the echo test? It should be ^C if it is working as expected.

Hi, I am having exactly the same issue, I am not able to stop the boot. Tried 100 times with 3 different usb-ttl adapters already. What is the echo test? I joined he tx with the rx terminals of the adapter and pressed ctrl-c, nothing shows up ; other characters show up just fine however. So I am not sure what the problem is - is it putty for not sending ctrl-c or the router for not accepting it? Or maybe something else? Any answer is appreciated.

Directly from my recovery notes...the key is the use the switch.

redhawk

Code:

Set static IP on rig
I used a switch inline
Press Reset button on R7000 unit
Setup tftp using PumpKIN
used the R7000-V1.0.7.2_1.1.93.chk file to put it to the 192.168.1.1 address
Power cycled router.  As soon as Power is amber and port is amber hit the start button on PumpKIN.
Flash takes 2-3 minutes...then it wait until it reboots and power LED will come on white....along with the wireless LEDS.
Wait a good 5 minutes...then power cycle.
go to 192.168.1.1 and use the Netgear Genie to navigate to the Administration tab

un=admin
pw=password

Advanced Tab, Administration, Router Update.  flash a factory_to_dd-wrt.chk file
Configure.

Should be able to run the Kong.chk file to update as well.
