Hi all,

Questions on top:
1) How to confirm the R6300v2 is actually the 'CH' variant? (I saw mentions of yellow/blue ribbon somewhere)

2) For initial flash, is it correct/sufficient to flash from <Kong>'s http://desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/dd-wrt.K3_R6300V2CH.chk build?

3) Once DD-WRT is on the R6300V2CH, is it safe to flash <Kong>'s regular standard build http://desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_STD.bin in subsequent updates?

Context:
I am getting a refurbished R6300v2 to act as an AP on top of my regular R7000:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Netgear-R6300-V2-802-11-ac-n-g-b-Dual-Band-AC1750-Gigabit-WiFi-Router-/262709761201?hash=item3d2ab8d4b1

I am flashing <Kong>'s build on it once it arrives. As far as I gather this is a CH variant (i.e. from the ISP Charter). Various threads of information suggests it needs different handling on flash:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=1033309
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_R6300v2

Thus my two questions above. Help is much appreciated.

Thanks~

A good starting point is the supported devices wiki: https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices#Netgear

There you can find the initial install file and if you are lucky an install guide (you are lucky Smile )

Thank you egc~ I did find the install guide (2nd link in bottom of post). The information there is helpful and I learned about the Charter/CH variant through that page. Though, specific for <kong> build, there are two CHK files --> dd-wrt.K3_R6300V2.chk & dd-wrt.K3_R6300V2CH.chk.

I'd just like to confirm if the dd-wrt.KC_R6300v2CH is indeed intended and sufficient for flashing initial build to a Charter R6300v2. And of course, if anyone here has experienced any 'gotchas' or caveats?

Thanks a lot!

Would anyone know the current state for the CH version of R6300v2?

From this 2014 thread (http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=263355&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=45), it seems the file size matters. The current dd-wrt.K3_R6300V2CH.chk in <Kong>'s initial build is even bigger than the one in that old thread.

Would it be safe to flash the dd-wrt.K3_R6300V2CH.chk from <Kong>'s PTB? Or it's preferable to go through the old build in installation guide first, and then flash the latest <Kong> build?

Thanks a lot to all!

At least for now the only one giving size problems and bricking routers were only BS builds newer than 30432. So Kong is safe to flash.

About your 2nd question on 1st post. Yes.
About the 3rd. Read the txt file on the link Malachi gave you.

i have two R6300V2 CH, the only file that will work for initial flash from stock of CH version is the following one, which is linked to in the wiki:

http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt-ren/K3-AC-Arm/Initial/dd-wrt.K3_R6300V2CH.chk

its a 13MB file, all other files are over 20MB and will not flash initially from stock (will not brick as well).

in case you received an R6300V2 (not Charter model), use the firmware linked to in wiki as well (i didn't test it myself, i only have CH model)

ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2015/02-04-2015-r26138/netgear-r6300v2/factory-to-dd-wrt.chk

2nd link firmware is ancient history.

Thanks all for the reply!

Just to recap, from what I gather above, this is what I'll do once I get the R6300v2_CH:

1. Flashing the latest <Kong> init build at http://desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/dd-wrt.K3_R6300V2CH.chk won't brick the unit even if it fails

2. If #1 above fails, flash the 13MB older <Kong> init build from the WIKI

3. Once I get a DD-WRT build running, I can flash the regular STD .bin build from <Kong>'s PTB

4. The unit will no longer have trace of being a CH-unit fromt his point, and can go back and forth between Netgear stock or any DD-WRT builds.

5. Of course, if it were a regular (i.e. non-CH unit), I'll just flash the regular init build here http://desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/dd-wrt.K3_R6300V2.chk

Did I get these right?

1,2 and 3 right. Just flash the bin file if you're upgrading/downgrading, there's no point in reflashing the same version as chk.

Thanks Xeon2k8. If I did end up in #2, I'll need to do the #3 right after to upgrade. Hope I luck out and get a non-CH unit.

It should arrive tomorrow. I'll report back here after my attempt. I am hoping it'll be a nice complement to the R7000.

Thanks all again!

Reporting back. I lucked out and got the regular (non-CH) version. I flashed the regular initial build from http://desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/dd-wrt.K3_R6300V2.chk

Now it has <Kong>'s build 31500 on it. I am now trying to figure out how to configure it as a WIFI AP!
