I just bought an R8500 made in Vietnam as well. I couldn't get the latest build to load either. On the bright side the feature set in the stock firmware is pretty decent and has most of the things i use including the VLAN capability. Once you get around using that stupid Genie wizard.... I will follow this post and hopefully eventually can load WRT

We also have new dhd drivers for those triple radio units, maybe the new R8500 works with these drivers, will have a build for testing soon.

Attached is the console log for the netgear firmware and the attempt to install the test image. The test image failed to install with the same error as before

Hello All,

Could you please help with the instructions to open the router to connect USB-TTL Adapter. It had 2 screws and i removed them and trying to access the motherboard, but with not successful. Any guidance on the steps or pointing to an existing youtube article would be great.

By the way, i have this USB-TTL to connect to this router. Please let me know if it is compatible to push the firmware from a laptop into this router?

Thanks in advance.

You need to remove four more screws underneath base rubber grip which Is of black color and in square shape.
slightly open from one corner (don't strip off completely) and you can remove the screw when it is exposed halfway trough.
That way it is easier to stick it back in place.
Once you removed these four screws, raise the small plastic cover covering the USB ports then slide out the base cover.

@ng_r8500, For the USB-TTL adapter cable, the one you mentioned seems to be a 5V one so no good. You need a 3.3V adapter.

Many people have used the one below and confirmed to be working:

https://www.amazon.com/JBtek-WINDOWS-Supported-Raspberry-Programming/dp/B00QT7LQ88/ref=pd_sim_23_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=8QMP5RJ800Z8RZ9R9F93

IF you are into some tech hobby then you can make USB-TTL adapter.
The cheapest way is to get the old Nokia cellphone usb data cable which you can get it from mobile phone spare shops for $1 apiece.
Connect it to your laptop if it is recognize as PL2303 chip then you are fine.
cutoff the Nokia connector side and identify the vcc, Gnd Rx and Tx. You can insulate the VCC wire then you are safe to use this.

Really appreciate quick response. I used your input to open up the hidden screws and now i am able to open the hood to access TTL.

Thank you very much. Now i need to find/follow right steps and sequence to debrick the router. This is definitely a great first step (atleast for me).

I also have a router netgear R8500, made in Vietnam, and it is impossible to update with any dd-wrt firmware (an error message says that the firmware is not compatible).
Is there any way to solve this issue?

Not now, I have the same one. It's MP2 version and it'll be a long wait until @Kong can get this version device.

I'm stuck with an R8500 272-12473-02 from Vietnam as well. I am currently hooked up serially to confirm output matches everyone elses while flashing Kong's build.

Appears I have the same router issue, posting to subscribe.
Likely to take mine apart and toss on my 3.3 serial for testing as more info becomes available.

The MP2 version of R8500 does not work with Kong's build.

I know, that's why I subscribed to this and the other topic. Hoping if enough of us show a need and donate, there will be support. These should be great pieces of equipment with DD-WRT. I don't want to sell it. It was a big letdown to realize I bought a variant with no support.
