Hey guys, I've purchased a TP-Link Archer C7 and thinking it would be a huge improvement over my Linksys E4200v1...it doesn't feel like it.

The range due to the external antenna's on the Archer C7 make it slightly better but that got me thinking...install external antenna's on the E4200!

So I started seeing some 7dbi antenna kits for routers.

According to this DDWRT post:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=713665&sid=589114e537e1667260078f164931df94

According to the post in the thread above, my router has the following:
-3 antennas with gray wire are 2.4 GHz.
-3 antennas with black wire are 5 GHz.

So inorder to improve it, I should install 6 external antennas at most...if I care for the 5ghz band.

With that said, according to the dbi wireless range image below:

It would seem that 7dbi could impact nearby devices but work great for the wireless range.

I was thinking of maybe using a combination of a 2dbi, 5db and 7dbi antenna's.

This way I could cover close devices and possibly reach those devices further away.

Has anybody tried this or know if I would run into any issues?

I've spent a bit of time searching on external antenna mod's and haven't really come across much info...especially for the e4200.

Many many posts show that adding antenna to a router that was designed without them doesn't help.

On my TL-841n, if I replaced the 5dbi antenna with 7dbi antenna, adding the connectors would lose up to 3db.
Not an upgrade.

Realistically, the connector loss probably isn't that bad, and the 7dbi upgrade antenna probably isn't up to spec either.

I just bought an upgrade? antenna with the plastic casing mostly empty, and the active element was only 22mm. 3GHz? Margarita day at the antenna factory?

In this case, I didn't need "RP-SMA" connectors at all. The chance of success is greatly improved if I put "N" connectors on the router. That's because high quality wifi antennas come with "N" connectors.
