With that all being said, I haven't tested all the features of DD-WRT on this one yet. I would assume that the basic routing, DHCP, and standard WLAN features will all work fine. I imagine that more advanced features, such as QoS, may be less stable. Otherwise, I'm not sure why this model hasn't taken off yet.
It was probably pretty hard to do this in the past, but it seems Kong's 2015 builds have made it quite a bit easier. If someone can reproduce this basic methodology, the WNR3500Lv2 could be an affordable DD-WRT option.
For my purposes, it has been working very well so far.
Thanks to everyone who did all the leg work to this point, especially Kong!
I´am using the build 11/15/15 now for nearly a year and it works quite well.
*.chk files are needed if you flash from the netgear factory firmware (and yes, July-22-2015 release is needed for inital flash - under dd-wrt you can go ahead with the *.bin file)
Who likes to brick their router?
Don't install latest 06-01-2017-r32170/netgear-wnr3500lv2/. The name is exactly for the router but it will brick it.
This router model waited a long time to get dd-wrt firmware and it has mostly only one reliable, proved and trusted K3 dd-wrt build by Kong: desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-MIPSEL/dd-wrt.v24-K3_WNR3500Lv2.chk.

I followed the direction and was able to flash the 3500Lv2 with DD-WRT. The primary wifi works fine, but when I add another for guest using the virtual interfaces, I cannot log into that network. I even tried with no security and the phone can't connect. Anyone else has similar experience?

I am grateful that there is a working dd-wrt version for the 3500L router. I am curious if anyone noticed the download speed is slowed. I currently have a TP-link archer C3200 that I bought from costco. I did the speedtest and get 170 to 230 mbps down and 23 mbps up. However when I did the test with the 3500L, down is only around 60mbps. If I changed the dns, it went down to 20mbps.
I am wondering if there are certain settings I can change to make it better?
@artur-slavich
How is your router running now? I don't know how to usb ttl. So is it not possible to use the web interface to upgrade the latest firmware?
The only reason I want to upgrade the firmware is because in gateway mode I only get about 25% of the download speed. If nothing else is working, I'd rather just use the router as a switch with usb that I can use as printer and/or network share.
