I recently purchased on ebay a Netgear WNDR3800CH router, and then I find out on the wiki that the router cannot be upgraded to DDWRT without some hardware interfacing :

------------------------------------
WNDR3800CH Flashing
1.Disassemble router and connect a serial port adapter to J1 connector
2.Establish serial/terminal session at 115200,8,N to serial port
3.Apply power to router.
4.Interrupt U-Boot on the serial console by repeatedly pressing ENTER
5.Reset board model ID using board_model_id_set WNDR3800
6.Reboot router
7.Web load Netgear v1.0.0.16 firmware
8.Web load wndr3800-factory.img firmware
-------------------------------------

https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNDR3800

Now, is this what is referred to as a "JTAG" interface ? If so, can one of these JTAG cables be purchased commercially, and if not ---- can someone point me in the direction on how to fabricate one of my own (pinouts, circuit diagrams, ext) ?

I would appreciate the help, I think this router would be far better than what I have now (Linksys E3000)

No, the jtag cable is not what you need. You need an USB to serial TTL adaptor cable like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Quentacy%C2%AE-WINDOWS-Supported-Raspberry-Programming/dp/B00XBPGP96/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1457762233&sr=1-1&keywords=usb+serial+ttl+windows+10

Good luck!

Read the bottom of this page https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNDR3800

You can burn the board id also using telnetenable.exe
Google it.
