I have bought this model WDR3600v1, believing I could flash it with DD-WRT. I downloaded the firmware but get "Error 18005 unsuccessful......check filename".
Can anyone help, please?

Thanks for reply. I understand that I must first apply the 'factory to dd-WRT' first, but that's what doesn't work......'Error'. Perhaps I should use 'revert' first (to get past the block that TP-'Link seem to have applied), then 'factory to dd-wrt'.
Would that be a good idea? I am a complete noobie with router flashing and a bit scared! Should I be considering other builds, like Gargoyle, Openwrt, Tomato, etc.? Your advice will be appreciated!
This is a brand-new router straight out of the box.
- Make sure it is a version 1.xx WDR3600;
- Flashing from a wired computer (not WiFi);
- Upgrade or update using the latest stock TP-Link firmware;
- I suggest not to use DD-WRT Web Revert flash file onto stock TP-Link firmware. There's no guarantee that will work and it might brick it.

No it will not brick it, it will for sure be rejected by TP-Link stock firmware with an Error 18005.
But flashing a revert file onto stock firmware is completely useless anyway since the router already have stock firmware _________________ Kernel panic: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!
1) factory-to-ddwrt.bin : use it for the first installation;
2) tl-wdr3600-webflash.bin: use it for upgrading to the latest build.
So I flashed a stock router (TP-Link TL-WDR3600) with DDWRT (Worked great for 6 months then WIFI problems)
So then flash it back to stock using the DDWRT revert file.
Then I upgraded to latest TP-Link firmware found here,
http://www.tp-link.com/en/download/TL-WDR3600.html#Firmware
Then I want to go back to DDWRT then do the 30/30/30 reset then using the "factory-to-ddwrt.bin" I get this error;
"Error code: 18005
Upgrade unsuccessfully because the version of the upgraded file was incorrect. Please check the file name."
Ok, I got it working but I had to beg TPlink for a US NON LOCKING version of their firmware.
That is right, their latest US version now locks the device from any other firmware updates including going back to the EN or Universal version.
Here is what happened since my last post.
After getting stuck with the US locked version of their software that locks down the router and does not allow me to flash any other firmware, I contacted TPL and they emailed me a unlocked version attached to this post.
I flashed it then was able to flash again with DDWRT.
Do not use the US version of their firmware! It will lock you out from flashing other firmware.
If you do get locked out, try using the firmware attached here to unlock your WDR3600.
Also call TPL and let them know what a pain in the ass this is for following the FCC mandates to the fullest extent.

The above file was successful for me trying to achieve the same outcome so many thanks for sharing. I have been successful in upgrading to DDWRT on a firmware locked WDR 3600
