I assume you are using windows file sharing protocol.
I'm not sure its performance is good through the internet mainly because of latency.

You should be able to set any chillispot option in the web UI, in additionnal options.
I don't see why you would want to modify the firmware chilli.conf because it is generated at boot time from nvram ...

It seems that the bug has been corrected in the coova chillispot svn version, but nobody confirmed it works (I can't test it...)

pppoe does not have to be connected directly to the dd-wrt to make problems.
It can be anything that does support standard MTU sizes. Some ISP require lower MTUs.

with G and GS you will have the micro version, with lot of features disables because of lack of memory.
The GL has more flash and memory.

the wrt54g only has 8Mb of ram.
