nvram erase is the same as doing a software reset. it's not going to fix your problem.

after you issue the nvram set et0 command, did you issue the nvram commmit command and then reboot?

the Asus RT-AC66U/R is a single core router. to not buy obsolete, last gen equipment, you should buy a dual core unit instead.
