Any of these routers are better than modern Linksys WRT series with Marvell hardware.

If you need additional CPU resources, then yes R9000. Keep in mind R7800 is the most recommended.

Maybe try reverting versions of dd-wrt. r44715(r44719) is a good one apparently. It's worth a shot anyway.
