After installing this my 5Ghz radio was fine but the 2.4Ghz was absent.

The solution was to install CFE 1.0.1.9 .

(I suspect simply a newer one would have worked)

Also, probably not an issue ...

running atop CFE1.0.1.9 ( bl_version=1.0.1.9 )

And .... both 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz radios are working.

Well to partly answer my own question. The CFE is from broadcom. It's included in their GPL source code, found at:

You can also add the correct VLAN tag ,eg. based on MAC address (or indeed anything you code)

I general I've found VLANs not a useful as I'd like, but I suspect that's just me.

One place it occurs to me they'd be really useful is separating traffic from SSIDs . So:

nvram erase && reboot

anyhow. Same, just 5Ghz.

I've not yet reconfigured (just passwd) as there is quite a lot to change each time.

I followed the install instruction esp. WRT using the WPS button to reset the RAM before flashing.
