When the whole router is using the VPN (No PBR) then DNS is also routed via the VPN and you should be good.

If you want your Netflix etc. not using the VPN you have to use PBR and exclude those IP ...

There are many variants depending on your needs so there is no one size fits all!

But a kill switch I use is:
iptables -I FORWARD -i br0 -o $(get_wanface) -m state --state NEW -j REJECT - ...

Unfortunately things change and it is not easy to keep up.
