sigh - just started using dd-wrt and got my problem fixed and put DD-WRT v24-sp2 (07/10/09) std
(SVN revision 12476M NEWD Eko) on it, 3 days uptime and time to upgrade

The router itself seems warmer then a router should be running at, since I can actually feel the heat.

Turned off windows firewall and the tftp utility worked fine.

Nope, those didn't work. I'm going to keep trying but I think I'll eventually have to use the JTAG.

Yeah, I run a continuous ping, and it always seems to be 64.

Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL= ...

Even using a switch the TTL still is always at 64.

This matches what happens best:
The power LED flashes very fast and after about 20 seconds it lights permanently, but the DMZ LED did not light up. In this case Bootloader and Kernel (firmware) ...
