Wow, thanks all, so helpful (I think!). I've never tried anything like this before so all the numbers, VINT etc are meaningless to me but will print this out and take it step by step.

Have been told that my old Linksys wrt54g router is able to be flashed with the dd-wrt software, which is good. But... I have no idea which 'version' the router is and there's nothing on the box itsel ...
