These Broadcom chips are said to have an operating rating up to ~130c, I have seen this information from other dual core Broadcom routers.

Those appear to be 2 types of JTAG connectors next to the UART.

Perhaps that would be a better way to go after the storage chips.

after it has been flashed before any testing it should be powered off for 30 minutes

That way you can be sure that any problems are not due to old settings hanging about, but I think this route ...
