After getting hacked I didn't go through the necessary security steps for the router: I just did an NVRAM erase && install.
Found nothing suggesting errant viruses or spyware on the system ... |

Telnet (from LAN) is the only thing enabled by default after installation. This is noted in many places all over the forum and wiki... and for SSH remote management:

There is a technology that the router/client can use both simultaneously for higher throughput, no? |

I re-enabled QoS and set it to 900 mbit up/down. This caused the bufferbloat on the network (as tested by speedtest.net) to fall to under 1ms for both upload and download on a hardwired connection:
